There was approval in his expression, and the smile never wavered. "Itachi, really? You'll have to show me sometime." Shisui was grateful for his friend for doing so, though, and made a mental note of it to thank him in person. But he turned his attention to Ami again, still smiling. "What's your furthest, so far?" He was genuinely interested, and to be honest, a perhaps a little impatient than he let on to witness these improvements that she spoke of.

What came next, however, Shisui had not been expecting at all. The smile faded when he saw those big eyes downcast, and he peered curiously at the bag she held. But-- ah. She was offering to treat him to lunch?! Didn't this kind of thing usually work the other way round, with sensei paying for student? But he considered the offer seriously, weighing the pros and cons of accepting or declining the invitation.

Eventually, he decided that he'd accept, not really wanting to hurt her feelings or make it any more awkward. "Is it lunchtime already?" Small talk to dissipate the awkwardness. "Sure, why not?" Holding up the envelope, he flashed her a smile again. "Perhaps I can brief you on our first mission together while we eat, then? And afterwards, I'll pay for dinner."

Shisui watched and waited, wanting to see what kind of response he'd get from her at the news. This mission was, after all, long overdue. The fact that it was partly his responsibility to ensure that his genin were exposed to a variety of missions that would give them plenty of experience and motivation to hone their skills didn't escape him either.
