Test Drive Post!

Sunshineverse
Okay everyone, it's time to test some people out! The rules of the game are simple. You have a character you would like to try out as a native to the setting of this game. You want to see if this is the right setting to play said character in, right?

Well, then all you have to do is drop them into this post as a top level comment with this as the header:
Character name | Series (OC's just put Original here) | Planned Village Affiliation

Then you comment around and play with everyone else!

If you need some ideas on how to get started, you can drop your character in during the middle of a mission, have them at an eatery around their village, or maybe even just doing weapons practice. It's up to you how you want to set out, so feel free to put your characters in this version of the Naruto universe however it most seems appropriate. Just be sure to say where you put them somewhere in your post though, otherwise two people might not even be threading in the same country.

One last thing! Remember that your character was born in this universe, so whatever else you decide, your character is a world native, even if they might be a tourist in the village you decided to test them out on.

And that's it. Just be good to each other and have fun! Threads you do here can count toward future activity checks, so long as the person you're threading with gets in too. These threads can also be used for samples on your application.

INFY DADDY HYUUGA

[personal profile] heavenly_earth 2014-05-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
After signing approximately a hundred hand signals three times each, Neji was finally let out of the exam room. He'd passed ANBU's nonverbal fluency test after roughly a month's worth of studying, and he couldn't be more relieved to not ever have to look back at that manual ever again. He'd been dreaming about hand signs for weeks. He still didn't know how long the average shinobi took to memorize them, but he liked to think he'd managed at a reasonable pace- perhaps more simply because he hadn't taken many mission lately in an effort to barrel through his studies.

The same reason he hadn't been home for roughly five weeks.

He checked in on his father occasionally and wasn't lying when he said he was busy, but he didn't like to add to the faint worry lines around the man's eyes. What would he think about him joining ANBU? Perhaps he should have been more upfront about it, but ANBU carried higher risk, so he couldn't be sure which option might have stressed his father less. It wasn't really something he ever intended to find out.

At least not until he was staring straight at him as he made to leave Headquarters.

Neji stopped mid-step and glanced around, but nothing was different. Nothing aside from his father sitting behind a desk at ANBU's Headquarters like he was supposed to be there. Everyone else certainly seemed to think so. Another quick glance told him that this was in fact HQ, and he fought the will to turn around and walk right back around the corner.

The only reason he didn't was because he was pretty sure his father had already noticed. Half the room had noticed him staring in fact, and some looked between them with surprise, while others were amused- all while they pretended to be minding their own business, of course.

Neji ignored them and forced himself to walk again, moving for the desk where his father was sitting and with far more ease than he felt, dropped into one of the nearby chairs.

"Hokage-sama didn't mention you were ANBU," he said mildly, forgoing a proper greeting because he didn't need to advertise they were father and son in this place known for its incurably nosy members. Not like it wasn't alarmingly apparent anyway, but he'd like to hold onto some measure of pride.

The past five weeks have not been kind to Neji at all, have they? Hizashi knew very well the rigors a new ANBU inductee undergoes; he'd endured them all long ago, while being the caregiver for a young child. He had struggled, but ultimately, he had come out all the stronger for it, and with a new appreciation for all the many duties he held to everyone in his life--to Neji, to his brother, to the Hyuuga clan as a whole, to the Hokage, and even to Konohagakure and Fire Country itself. It was a healthy dose of perspective--humbling, the way shouldering any vast new responsibility should be, and finding yourself wanting when rising to the occasion to fill its mantle. So much depended on him, so much needed to be held in a delicate balance of tension, and yet.....

In this great land of Fire Country, our traditions root and sustain us, anchoring the land and holding it fast, even as it supports our noble clan. Our Main Family is a thick and towering trunk, a pillar of strength that shall never break, no matter how many it shelters in the shade of its mighty boughs. Our Branch Family spreads its limbs far and wide, to shield and protect all who would need it. And each of us is but one tiny leaf upon those limbs, innumerable and insignificant and absolutely indispensable. Any of us may fall, so long as we serve our purpose--yet without us and our tireless service, our clan would have no life to it at all.....

That was why Hizashi hadn't simply taken Neji aside to let him know that he didn't need to hide--not from him, anyway. A sense of discretion was important to cultivate, as was appropriate stealth, given their clan. The inevitable test they all went through, concealing their activities from even those closest to their hearts..... So Hizashi had given Neji his space, and simply questioned him gently when Neji had come home to check in on him, brows furrowed just so in unspoken concern and puzzled uncertainty, eyes lingering just the right length of time on him to check for injuries he knew weren't there. Neji was indeed a perceptive and promising young man, full of potential to be allowed to be a Jounin and an ANBU member at such a young age.....

If he'd realized that something was amiss, then Hizashi would have answered his questions honestly, and allowed the pretense to fall. But the question had never come, either because Neji was too busy to pursue it or had no idea at all. So Hizashi had said nothing.

Hizashi's head was bent over some paperwork, when Neji spotted him, busily penning the remains of a mission report--not that a trivial thing like looking down would stop a Hyuuga from noticing someone new entering the room. He didn't stop writing, but he did look up to greet Neji with a warm smile, calm and evidently utterly unsurprised to see him in the headquarters. The informality was understandable--and in a place like this, laudable. Hizashi simply turned a hand, palm up, to gesture how out of his hands such a decision was. "Hokage-sama rarely mentions anyone but who you'll be directly working with, does he? It's more secure that way. How are your studies coming along?"

It wasn't the expression he'd expected, but perhaps he should have known that his father might have been told, even if he hadn't been ANBU. After all, Obito had spoken with Gai about it.. Neji managed a faint smile of his own, his position and this talk too surreal for much more.

Questions ran through his mind, begging to know how long Hizashi had been in ANBU for, because he didn't recall any suspicious disappearances in the past seventeen or so years. Perhaps when he was too young? Or maybe even before he was born.

But he supposes Obito wouldn't have mentioned it to him- or anyone for that matter. It wasn't as if two Hyuuga were ever put together in one squad. Still, it could've saved him a lot of unnecessary stress. Or perhaps not, as he'd still have to avoid the compound in general. But his father would have been one less concern, and he was a little irked that Hizashi hadn't just told him he knew.

"I suppose," he answered finally, casting an annoyed flicker toward someone lingering within earshot. She pretended not to notice and he rolled his eyes, because she wouldn't actually notice. "My studies are going well- I just passed the nonverbal fluency test. I'll be instructed in advanced first aid for the next two weeks."

There were very few Hyuuga in the ANBU ranks as it was, really--they liked to keep their own close, and serve Konoha in their own way. That in mind, there was no reason to clump such a rare and valuable resource into the same squad, when they would want to spread it as far as they could manage. In that case, wasn't it possible that two members could potentially even go for years without seeing each other, unless they ran into each other like this, or had some reason to glimpse the tattoo beneath each others' robes?

To be honest, Hizashi had taken to doing that, at one point. It was easier, when he'd been able to keep a mental roster of who he could beg favors from, asking his fellow Branch cousins if they would mind a spot of babysitting if he was forced to be absent on ANBU business. He probably wouldn't have been able to manage, otherwise; it had been a godsend, having at least a few people he could trust for support.

"I'd expect no less..... Congratulations, Neji." There was another glow of warmth in those words, polite though they must have sounded on the surface, while someone still lingered in earshot. Still, there was no doubt Neji would be able to pick up on the undercurrent of pride there, finally able to hear about Neji's progress so openly. Neji had always been brilliant, after all; he'd worked tirelessly to ensure that gift wasn't wasted. In his mind, at least, that was one of the harder parts over with; less physically demanding than most, it was true, but the mental exhaustion incurred by memorizing such a complex silent language was immense. Difficult though it still was, in comparison, advanced first aid might even feel like a breath of fresh air.

At least that was more easily applicable, and practiced hands on, rather than forcing you to glue yourself to a book and memorize things. Neji always had learned best by doing, hadn't he?

Neji nodded curtly, suppressed the pleased flush that threatened to overtake his expression if he'd had just a little less control. It probably didn't sound like much to others, but he'd always striven to meet his father's expectations, took to the training Hizashi had given him as a child with a single-minded determination to perfect everything his father showed him.

Later, his own expectations of himself were set even higher, and his sheer will to meet his goals drove him to his accomplishments. There was no wall he wouldn't tear down to keep him from advancing, and he reveled in the challenges set before him, met them without hesitation for the thrill of accomplishment that followed. When he knew he could do something, there was no stopping him, and even if he couldn't, he'd still try- often until he succeeded.

"Thank you, Father," he said in a low voice that was still mindful of their surroundings. But it brightened, strengthened for a shift in topic. "But you're too valuable to be regulated to paperwork here, so I don't suppose this is your normal post."

It wasn't much at all, really. A member of a proud and insular clan congratulating one of their own on exceptional skill, skill they no doubt would have had to expect, for family to have reached this far. But for the friendliness he was showing, it could have even been a perfunctory acknowledgment between cousins, to outsiders who had no idea how closely related they were. But it warmed Hizashi's heart to see Neji striving so hard and progressing so far, so pleased with his accomplishments.

It was an accomplishment, after all, to come so far in such a short time. Neji had every right to be proud of himself. He had done so much, and been given so little, been faced with so many barriers he simply couldn't control, not a single one of which was fair..... Their clan alone was a formidable challenge to contend with, when a Branch member like them looked to better themselves so incredibly, a tether that would strangle the life out of them if they allowed it to.

He'd always tried to see to it that Neji would never become so tangled in such bindings. They may never truly be able to soar free enough to touch the sun, but at least Neji would be able to spread his wings and know the joys of flight at all.

He shook his head at that; this was hardly his post. Neji had hit the nail right on the head at that, of course. "Of course not. I always write my reports here, before I come home; there's far more privacy here than in the compound." There's a gentle quirk of his lips, that in anyone else might have been a sly smile, a subtle nudge at those who were still listening in on their conversation. "Even with all our comrades milling about."

Yes, our comrades. As of the moment Neji had been promoted to Jounin, and especially once he'd been inducted into the ANBU, the two of them now stood shoulder to shoulder in rank and position, equals in every way. Neji had come a long way; Hizashi couldn't help but be happier with him than he had words to easily express. How could anyone put something so ineffable into mere words, the feelings of watching your heart, your purpose, your living legacy grow up and come into their own before your very eyes?

[personal profile] heavenly_earth 2014-05-06 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Neji's smile warmed, thoughts spiraling down a similar vein. They were truly equals, now. He'd thought as much about his Jounin promotion, but he hadn't known about his father's ANBU status then. So unless Hizashi was also an ANBU Captain.. But even this was enough. They fought for the same things, in the same ways. They may never be a real team, but it felt like that in a looser sense now. Even Hyuuga..

"Yes," he agreed with a mild tip of his head. To his amusement, their eavesdropper had suddenly found somewhere else she needed to be. "And that's why I won't be home much for what appears to be around three more weeks. I've been staying at my small apartment in the Jounin Station."

There wasn't really a hard age set on when a person could move out after all, and was more dependent on what they could afford. As a Jounin, affording a tiny apartment at the Station was hardly an issue, but he didn't intend to move out altogether. Not so long as his father remained tethered to the compound, because it wasn't what anyone would call a relaxing atmosphere and he'd long since started to see the hints of strain in his father over the years. And he doubted Hizashi even had a spot in the Station, with how often he was needed at the compound as Hiashi's aid.

"You're free to come by, of course. I'd like to talk further about the different style you've taken on for field use, as I'll need to begin focusing on my own once my studies are over with."

It was more than he ever could have hoped for, everything he could have dreamed of. Neji had not become ensnared in the vice-like grip of their clan, had not inherited his bitterness and pains, even if he'd also failed to inherit true opportunity within it, as well. No, he had risen above, and shown his true colors for what they were--a blessed young man and a gifted shinobi beyond compare, a genius who Hizashi was confident would eventually grow to surpass him in every possible way.

That was exactly as it was meant to be. The Will of Fire burned brightly within Neji, and far from needing him to illuminate the way, Neji was more than capable of finding his own path now. That was far more precious than any headship. That was worth more than any favor the rest of the Main Family could offer--and for all that the majority of them disgust him, sometimes he couldn't help but pity Hiashi for the life he's led, that he may never be able to share the same bond with Hinata, or even Hanabi.

Even their most stubborn eavesdropper seemed to have taken the hint and gone; Hizashi can't help a moment of satisfied amusement, watching her scurry out the door. Even spending time in the hustle and bustle of HQ could be considered relaxing, compared to the Hyuuga compound; he had actually never had an apartment at the Jounin Station, so this was about as close as he could come to a home away from home. "I understand. And I'd be glad to come see what you've managed to set up there; that would be the most ideal place to discuss such things by far."

Still, he'd make sure to send advance notice, first. A young man of Neji's age deserved his own space, even if he'd shown no indication of actually wanting to graduate from their family suite to a room or apartment of his own. He was happy to have him close, of course, but..... well, Hizashi didn't want to curtail his independence, and he certainly didn't want Neji to limit himself simply for his sake.

Neji nodded, though the thought of his father actually visiting brought to mind the number of things wrong with the place.

"It's not much," he said honestly, fighting a sudden bout of self-consciousness. "I'll need to get at least a pair of chairs and a decent table.."

There wouldn't even be food in the fridge if Izumo and Gai hadn't stopped by occasionally. He was getting worse about eating properly lately, buried in studies as he had been. It was mostly a place to study, then crash and wake up to start over again. That he didn't really have guests went largely unsaid, mostly because he didn't want to provoke any 'girlfriend' references Hizashi might have heard in the compound in the wake of his absence, or around Headquarters, once it'd made it around the rumor mill proper. They really, absolutely did not need to have that talk on any level.

"But that won't be an issue." Wasn't like it needed to be expensive, particularly nice looking furniture. After all, once he was done with his intensive studying, he wasn't sure how often he'd use the place. The independence and privacy was nice, but he'd probably find himself home more often than not.

"At any rate," he said, standing. "I've kept you from your report long enough."

He wouldn't he a Hyuuga if he hadn't heard the rumors circulating, to be honest. A girlfriend..... He supposed he wouldn't have been surprised to hear Neji attempting to keep it quiet, if that had actually been true. Still, he also wouldn't be surprised to hear Neji combating those rumors, too, if that had actually been the case--that he apparently hadn't breathed a word in protest lately pointed to it being a convenient excuse, a tell in and of itself that the whole rumor rang false. Still, whenever he did get around to finding love.....

Well, then they could have that talk, and Hizashi would be there for him, whatever happened, whoever he chose.

Until then, though? Let those false rumors rest as peacefully as they could, when they were still circulating through the village full-force. Neji could use the cover for his training. Hizashi nodded his agreement as Neji rose; he would welcome further company, of course, but..... well, it really wasn't an ideal place for an in-depth chat, was it? He could bring over his weapons to show Neji, and possibly some ingredients to cook with, and they could make a night in out of catching up with each other over ANBU matters. "It doesn't need to be much--as long as it serves you well, it's enough. I'll send a message before I come, unless you'd rather set a time now?"
heavenly_earth: (Anime; Movie; Consider)

[personal profile] heavenly_earth 2014-05-07 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Neji hummed an agreement, relaxing about the matter. He'd just clean up a little and bring over a small table set. As for their meet-up, scheduling anything as an active shinobi was hard, so he shrugged.

"Feel free to send a message. Trying to schedule something is just asking for unexpected situations to arise." Then they'd need to reschedule and do it all over again, so the more flexible option was wiser in his opinion.

"But I haven't had much more than studying demands on my time, so whenever some time opens up for you.."

His father was quite busy after all, and now he knew the true extent of it. He was having a hard enough time balancing his studies with being an active Jounin, and still managing to spend time with his team to train. But Hizashi had Hyuuga to worry about, acting in a double capacity for Hiashi.
withmyownwill: (Smile)

[personal profile] withmyownwill 2014-05-07 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course." Anyone else might have laughed; Hizashi simply smiled knowingly instead, inclining his head. Scheduling was an uncertain proposition at best, especially between trying to work around two active Jounin's obligations--and especially when one of those Jounins was studying to become a fully-functioning member of ANBU. Asking either of them to stick to a set time..... that was just asking for disaster.

Now that Neji knew the full extend of Hizashi's obligations, though, was there any wonder that the fine worry lines around his eyes had slowly grown over the years? Was it surprising at all, that occasionally the mask slipped, and a hint of that strain peeked out? As controlled and disciplined as Hizashi was, as smooth and seamless a facade as he adopted, even he wasn't perfect. He might not have wanted to show anyone the uglier side of himself or his duties, but that didn't mean he could keep it neatly tucked away behind a mask all the time--whether that mask was made of porcelain or something far more intangible.

"I should send word sometime in the next few days, then..... Good luck, Neji. Don't hesitate to let me know if you need anything." It's not much, not really, just an almost formal parting of ways between two family members, with only the expected sentiments and encouragements being given. Still, the offer is genuine--if Neji needs anything, then he'll be there as quickly as possible, ready to provide anything it's in his power to get. He may not be able to give Neji the world, but Hizashi had already long since given him his world, to take from at his leisure; in the end, that would have to be enough.
heavenly_earth: (Anime; Movie; Satisfied)

[personal profile] heavenly_earth 2014-05-07 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
It was more than enough. Hizashi had given him as much as he could as a child, and continued to do so. Even if now, he worked very hard for his independence- not as a slight to his father, but rather because that strain was there and raising a child alone was no easy task. Yet Hizashi had managed, given him his full attention as a child, taught him everything he'd need to know growing up.

So now that he could effectively take care of himself, he hoped that his father might be able to relax a little more if he lessened how much he relied on him. Even if he did miss those precious days of being his father's sole focus, of training and falling and being encouraged to get up and try again- a bright childhood despite the shadow that hung over them both.

"I look forward to it," he said sincerely. It had been weeks since he had an extended conversation with the man, after all. Some time together and away from the compound for a change sounded perfect.

"And thank you." Neji inclined his head in a short, informal bow. "Take care, and I'll see you then."
