Test Drive Post!

Sunshineverse
Okay everyone, it's time to test some people out! The rules of the game are simple. You have a character you would like to try out as a native to the setting of this game. You want to see if this is the right setting to play said character in, right?

Well, then all you have to do is drop them into this post as a top level comment with this as the header:
Character name | Series (OC's just put Original here) | Planned Village Affiliation

Then you comment around and play with everyone else!

If you need some ideas on how to get started, you can drop your character in during the middle of a mission, have them at an eatery around their village, or maybe even just doing weapons practice. It's up to you how you want to set out, so feel free to put your characters in this version of the Naruto universe however it most seems appropriate. Just be sure to say where you put them somewhere in your post though, otherwise two people might not even be threading in the same country.

One last thing! Remember that your character was born in this universe, so whatever else you decide, your character is a world native, even if they might be a tourist in the village you decided to test them out on.

And that's it. Just be good to each other and have fun! Threads you do here can count toward future activity checks, so long as the person you're threading with gets in too. These threads can also be used for samples on your application.

Gaara shifts as Temari reaches for the papers, and unfolds himself so he can read across her. One of his pet projects is comparing the missions each of the team is assigned, after all, and Baki is their senior member.

"There was some trouble earlier in the month--" he began, before picking up on the focus on the open door and trailing off.

That they all arrive separately is one thing that hasn't changed, barring the odd sullen escorts when one or the other of them was staying away to prove some kind of point. They have such a variety of interests now that these meetings are about the most organised part of their months. That said, the time has come and gone for Kankuro to show, and Gaara belatedly recalls hearing something yelled down the corridor at him from his brother's rooms.

"Kankuro is busy," he says, a little too late to be helpful. "He sends his apologies."

"Owner got himself killed interfering in a fight outside the stall." Well, that was what had officially happened. Ameyuri might be his senpai, but Kisame hasn't been given a clear answer on her current security clearance yet. "I was out on a hunting mission and didn't witness it happen."

On the other hand, he has no concerns about revealing he's been a hunter-nin. It's not like he was ever very discreet about it, often taking Samehada with him. Unlike Kushimaru-senpai, Kisame hadn't just absorbed the mask into his identity and worn it all the time.

He carefully ignores the stumble and points out the stall as they turn down another street. The owner might be familiar, having been the daughter of the owner of that other stall, though she's much older than Ameyuri might remember. Some of the signed bowls are still there, but many have visible cracks.

Temari reads the offered report. Silent as she reads over what has to be the most boring mission on the continent after teaching the Kazekage's children for as long as he has. The most amusing part is how she doesn't so much as shift away as her brother perches to read over her shoulder. If seh had to be entirely honest, it shouldn't have come as any surprise given that she'd invaded his personal space plenty in the last few years.

She looks up from the report glancing at Gaara a moment gaze questioning and then shakes her head. These meetings weren't exactly optional, so unless their father had given him a task there was no reason he couldn't leave his workshop to sit down and give Baki a sit rep. She sighs slowly and settles the report in her lap again.

"There were a string of mind transfer mishaps and it wasn't limited to only Suna. Gaara actually ended up one of it's victims though damage was nonexistent despite him not being in control of himself." She explains, "We've kept the Kazekage primarily in the dark about the reason the three of went to Konoha at the time. It's safer." She murmurs her gaze sliding to Gaara as she says it, searching for a sign that he would like this to remain an unknown to their father for as long as possible.

Baki grows more serious at the first mention of trouble, his hands remaining unfolded as he settles back in, his eye narrowing. "I will expect to meet him at a later time, in that case." He begins, but for now he puts the third sibling aside to listen to Temari's explanation.

"...Mind transfer mishap...?" He repeats, almost incredulously. That is a lot to unpack in the space of a single phrase. Mind transfers weren't in his area of experience, but he had heard of them at least, enough to know some potential of what could affect Gaara. Honestly he hadn't actually thought such things were capable of affecting jinchūriki. "Who was in control of Gaara, then? Where was his mind transferred?"
The mention of keeping information from the Kazekage is accepted without Baki so much as batting an eyelash. He has long acknowledged the importance of keeping potentially compromising knowledge away from their father, as long as the safety of the village is not directly at stake. In that regard, he and his students have an understanding.

Baki was not a fan of Kirigakure. It wasn't a good bias to have, he knew, but he still nevertheless had it. He distrusted its leaders, he distrusted its members especially, and worst of all the moisture filled air wreaked havoc on his sinuses. He'd spent the trip sniffling and coughing as if he had had a cold, and he hated that. But he had soldiered through Water Country's... unique climate nonetheless in order to facilitate his student's second attempt at the chuunin exams.

He was the one to open the door when he heard a knock outside, pulling it open to see who it was.
He looked down at the young man, blinking briefly as he took in the sight of him. He recognized him, vaguely, from the prior exams he had attended in Konoha. Those markings are hard to forget, after all. "...Can I help you...?" He asked, cautiously.

Hello, intimidating sand dad

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-04-04 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
This was not how Naoki had pictured this going. Show up, hand over the gift, and leave before his presence became something to talk about. Running into Gaara's jounin squad leader was not part of the plan, but Naoki didn't visibly react before blinking twice.

"I'm here to see Gaara." As far as he knew, Gaara hadn't told anyone on the Suna side about training Naoki. Naoki didn't mention it either, and Kisame only knew because he'd been there the first time Gaara asked to have the Silent Killing technique used on him.

"I brought him a gift."

[personal profile] fourredstripes 2015-04-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
His next inhale was embarrassingly loud enough to be heard in the space between them and he had to swallow down another cough, leading Baki to raise a hand and briefly rub his fingers over his face. A gift. For Gaara. As far as Gaara related surprises went this was one of the more agreeable ones but his first reaction was suspicion. It wasn't impossible that Gaara could have met and befriended someone without his notice, especially considering how he had changed in the past years, but...

He still felt an instinctive flicker of distrust. "You're a acquaintance of Gaara's?" He eyed the parcel in his hands. It too, looked innocent enough. "What's your name?"

It was just a little gratifying to know the shinobi from Suna were just as miserable in Kiri as he was in their village, but he also felt bad for them. It was a drastic climate change.

"Yes. I'm Kashima Naoki. We met after the chuunin exams in Suna." It was for the best that they met after and not during. Naoki doubted an encounter with Gaara would have over very well before Gaara developed an interest in his abilities. He wondered if the fake plant would be checked for traps or simply thrown out if left with the jounin.

Kashima Naoki. It wasn't a name that brought anything to mind but besides the more infamous members he was admittedly not as well versed with Kiri nin as he could be. He nodded his head, deciding to introduce himself in turn. "My name is Baki. As you may have guessed, I am Gaara's teacher, as well as his siblings'."

He could tell the plant he was holding was made of cloth and not living material, and the fact that the plant was fake piqued his interest. He held out his hand in between them. "May I see it?"
withfocus: (pic#8916505)

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-04-04 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Naoki nodded in acknowledgement of the introduction, and lifted the delicately crafted plant in its pot. "It's a sundew. They eat insects." Not this one, obviously. It was meant more for people visiting to take home with them, or people who would be away too often to meet the needs of a real plant.

He held it out for Baki. Even if it did get tossed out, and he didn't get to see Gaara, he could always write to him.

YOU HAVE SATISFIED THE SAND DAD

[personal profile] fourredstripes 2015-04-04 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
He's heard of the species before, as carnivorous plants were often mentioned in botanical texts as a novelty. He took it from him in both hands, carefully, turning the pot from one side to another. It was an intricate work of art, the small... barbs? hairs? of the plant impressively rendered in wire and what looked like beads comprising the 'dew'.

He wasn't about to start tearing apart the gift to check it for dangers. He simply tilted it back a little to check the bottom and handed it back to him. Gaara was more than capable of defending himself, and if there was nothing immediately threatening that he could see, it was probably fine.

"You should give it to him yourself." He backed up, standing aside from the doorway to allow him in.
withfocus: (pic#8916505)

hurray. sand dad approval

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-04-04 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
He took the plant back, and blinked quietly as Baki stepped aside. Naoki walked into the apartment, one of several set aside for people visiting Kiri on official business. They saw the most use during the chuunin exams.

"Thank you."

"One Uzumaki Kushina," she answers smoothly without a hitch though now that she's providing a full debrief she scans her teachers office quickly for any sign that the Kazekage was spying on them. He shouldn't be, he'd assigned all three to Bake for a reason, but one could never be too careful when it came to secrets from the leader of their village.

"Gaara ended up in her body in Konohagakure. Once it became apparent that Gaara was not himself. Kankuro and I took steps to limit her exposure and question her in private and proceeded from there." She pauses takes a breath. Again her teal eyes slide to her brother to check if she'd missed anything yet. When he didn't speak up she continued assuming that she was providing an accurate and full report to their teacher.

"After some discussion we fabricated a story to travel to Konoha and we worked with their seal experts to find a solution though they seemed to have switched back on their own after a few days. We're still without a defense or solution to the problem."

If there was any good news in Heat's newfound rebellious attitude, it was that he at least still listened to a few of them. He may openly question Serph, but when told to stand down he did...at least eventually. The thought that one day Heat would ignore the order entirely sent a cold chill down her spine.

She nods, "We'll have a better idea of our options once we get more information." Of that much she is sure. Right now they have too many fractured pieces of information and not all of them fit together neatly with what the others know to create clear pictures. She imagines that frustrates Gale the most.

"It bothers you, not having all the information doesn't it?"
vitalfunction: (There might actually be a smile here.)

[personal profile] vitalfunction 2015-04-04 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Heat and his rebelliousness will need to be brought to heel, sooner rather than later. Gale isn't sure how yet, because at its source, he's certain it's some competion that Heat imagines between himself and Serph over Sera, which is simply beyond comprehension. Why fight? Sera has proven that she is there to help all of them. But now is not the time for that, so he pushes the thoughts away, pleased that Argilla is apparently doing the same.

Then she asks that question, and his mouth quirks in a smile that doesn't quite make it into the light before it's gone. "Knowledge is power, Argilla. Now more than ever. But I will learn to adapt."

They have before, and gotten out of traps and betrayal to come back stronger. He will adapt; he has to. Knowledge is something he doubts he'll ever have enough of to feel comfortable ever again.

"A demonstration never ends up being useless, even if the immediate effect is small. I would be glad to watch, if you're willing."

That brightens Naoto's mood a bit, and she lifts her attention more fully from the scrolls. "Though perhaps, I should explain my goals more completely. My primary affinity is Wind, however, being raised in Iwagakure before returning to my father's home country, meant in order to succeed, I needed to learn Earth. I do not like to give up once I've started something."

The disgust with and dismissal of her talents in Iwa still burns, and Naoto is determined to master Earth just so she can show them how strong she is.
thewheelturns: (The best of manners.)

[personal profile] thewheelturns 2015-04-04 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The question brings a not-so-well-hidden sparkle into her eyes. Naoto enjoys talking about tactics and skills, and how to make the best use of abilities.

"What increase of reach a longer blade would bring me is made negligible by my own unfortunate stature." Naoto says that crisply, in spite of the fact that she tries to straighten her spine more and lifts her chin in defiance. "And besides that fact, my affinity is Wind."

She doesn't elaborate, but if this ninja knows what can be done with Wind chakra and a blade, he'll know exactly how she compensates for the shorter reach of a smaller blade in an efficient way. Wind chakra cuts so beautifully, perhaps not as well as Lightning, but well enough for her purpose.

He didn't realize he was ducking himself into said ruff and tilting his head so the brim of his hat hid his face as he tried not to let his embarrassment and pleased feelings show too much.

"I-i wasn't asked...I-i wanted t-to say hello when i-it seemed you were heading t-this way."

He barely looks up after admitting that so his next statement is a bit muffled as it's spoken into his neck ruff.

"I-i'm a genin now a-and Juukyuu isn't as hard to use now Houou-sama."

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-04-05 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't say being short is unfortunate, Naoto-san. There are plenty of tactics and combat styles that favor one who is generally smaller than their opponents," Naoki says, though he's sure she knows that already. "I'm usually the smaller fighter myself, and a wind affinity is very helpful."

Being able to use his own sword two-handed meant it was on the longer end of one-handed blades, but being able to add that extra leverage and strength was very helpful in a fight against larger opponents with larger weapons.
fourredstripes: (gasp)

[personal profile] fourredstripes 2015-04-05 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
His expression slides from shock, concern, then back to the same apprehension. He's impressed at their resourcefulness, considering nothing went more awry. In addition, the Kazekage hasn't seemed to have caught wind of the incident, which Baki considers to be a good thing.

"Are you telling me that at this time we do not know how this occurred? The Yamanaka have not stepped forward?" He'd expect, if anyone, they might have at least an explanation, if not taking responsibility for the event.

"Gaara, have you been feeling any averse effects since the event?" Again, he is not sure how Shukaku would complicate such a state, much less Konoha's tails beast.

There is something in the way he speaks that makes her shake her head, almost like she can hear that barely there smile without looking. Or maybe it was the comment about him adapting. She wasn't sure. And that lack of surety bothered her far less than it would him.

Words bubble up then, teasing words, light-hearted. The words are almost out of place for such a serious situation, but they feel appropriate. "Of that I have no doubt." She very nearly grins then, her body language reading relaxed and lacking in the tension she'd had when they began their conversation.

It would come back, but for the moment it was nice to feel sort of free in the company of a comrade.

"Hmph. Foolish. All uniqueness is useful. At least the reason for being sent to me is less obscure now." He lightly pivoted, hopping to another perch and watching his movements carefully.

He had a long way he could go, he could see that easily enough.

It was very strange to be called young.

"And you believe you can teach him these skills?" He was alert, sensing the exact moment when he lost track of the chakra of natural energy, something he'd always had a less solid hold on in his senses because it was a different sort of feeling. Still, the man felt... sincere, and not as though he was scheming.

It was something.

"And then? When you feel you've taught him enough?"
