Test Drive Post!
Sunshineverse | ||||||||
Okay everyone, it's time to test some people out! The rules of the game are simple. You have a character you would like to try out as a native to the setting of this game. You want to see if this is the right setting to play said character in, right? Well, then all you have to do is drop them into this post as a top level comment with this as the header: Character name | Series (OC's just put Original here) | Planned Village Affiliation Then you comment around and play with everyone else! If you need some ideas on how to get started, you can drop your character in during the middle of a mission, have them at an eatery around their village, or maybe even just doing weapons practice. It's up to you how you want to set out, so feel free to put your characters in this version of the Naruto universe however it most seems appropriate. Just be sure to say where you put them somewhere in your post though, otherwise two people might not even be threading in the same country. One last thing! Remember that your character was born in this universe, so whatever else you decide, your character is a world native, even if they might be a tourist in the village you decided to test them out on. And that's it. Just be good to each other and have fun! Threads you do here can count toward future activity checks, so long as the person you're threading with gets in too. These threads can also be used for samples on your application.

"Of course," he called back, still smiling. Though, to be honest, Shisui would have liked for her to address him by name, but he figured it might feel awkward for her to do so, especially since she made chuunin only not too long ago.
"We'll talk inside." He slipped back into the shop, reserving answers for when she joined him there.
And hey-- what gave away the crazy?
no subject
Although it would be additionally awkward to call him by his first name sans-honorific due to her recent chuunin status and...equally recent introduction to him as a teacher, even years down the road he's likely to find she refuses to call him anything of the sort. Respect is important. Even if said person being respected might not want that form of it.
It's complex, in Sakura's head.
She followed after him silently, but with a curious expression. Was there a reason they couldn't speak while walking? Reading his moods was somewhat difficult, given how different they were from Shirakumo and Shino's. They were deceptively similar to Kiba's, but...also not. That said, she's fairly certain she hasn't been caught accidentally hearing anything, so there should be no reason for him to be giving her privacy for a scolding.
Whatever else he might be thinking of telling her then, she had no idea. Maybe he was just anxious for dango.
...She might not have anything against the Uchiha, but that didn't mean she didn't know the reputation they had in the village, diminishing as it was since Obito Uchiha became the Fifth Hokage.

A table with a spread of tea and sweets was already laid out, and it looked as though it had recently been occupied, too. Obviously, because it was his table. Located right next to the window and with a great view, he'd spotted her from where he'd sat.
Shisui stood, waiting for her to take her seat. "I got back just this morning. How have you been?" It had been a while; he'd been gone a month.
no subject
She glanced down at the table briefly, before moving to sit across from the seat that appeared to have been occupied last. Obviously...he must have seen her approaching and came out to see her on purpose. Was her pattern predictable enough that he actually knew she'd pause long enough for him to come out and lure her inside? She'd probably...want to do...something about that if so.
"Team Shirakumo received an A rank mission." Despite being composed of chuunin, Hayame's skill as a jounin and the competency of the chuunin under him were such that an A-rank mission for the team itself wasn't completely uncommon. Actually she was a little more excited about her other news. "I was assigned a B-rank escort while you were gone."
Chuunin for a year she might have been, but B ranks were still A Deal for her, even if they weren't...always...a big one.
...Honestly there's very little more else to share in the month. She reached out gingerly to pick up one of the sticks of dango nearest to her. "I've been practicing, too. I can activate the genjutsu almost twice as fast as last time."
no subject
But he took his seat across from her, and reached to pick up the tea pot, tipping it slightly towards the empty cup sitting in front of her, almost as though he'd been expecting someone. It was a silent question as to whether she wanted some.
Shisui listened, too, while she spoke of her exploits during the past month. It was plain as day-- the pride with which she announced the B-rank solo mission, and Shisui sent her an approving smile. "Did it go without any complications?" Not that complications meant you did a bad job; sometimes things changed.
His smile widened when she mentioned the improvement in her genjutsu. "Is that so? You'll have to show me, then."
no subject
She could have gone without tea, but she wasn't about to turn it down when offered, particularly by her current sensei. She reached out to nudge the cup toward the tea pot a bit in a sort of silent 'go ahead'.
While she always thrived under pressure from her sensei, approval and praise was...really just as important to getting her to bloom under teaching, and while she'd gotten past much outward displays of pleasure or happiness at things like approval, she still gave a small smile to mirror his. At his question, she shook her head. "It went well." The A mission had hitches, but an A mission that didn't was barely an A.
She gave a quick nod. "Do you have time to go to the training fields today?" Whether he wanted her to use them on a genjutsu doll or him, it wouldn't be appropriate to cast genjutsu in a tea shop.
no subject
Shisui tipped the pot just that much to let the tea pour into her cup, golden liquid filling up almost to the brim. The tea here was good, in his opinion, and Shisui drank a lot of tea to know the very minutest of differences.
"Good." He didn't hide the fact that he was praising her. He'd rather praise someone where praise was deserved than never praise a person at all and crush their confidence. Shisui didn't necessarily believe in all that reverse psychology, though he wasn't too shy to point out where improvements could be made.
"Actually, I do. Do you want to try it on me, this time?" The smile had turned into a smirk, which suggested he had something in store for her as well.
Perhaps chancing upon her today hadn't been coincidence after all~
no subject
But she kept that opinion to herself, because it wasn't like he'd stop eating and drinking what he wanted to, and, well...at the moment he was praising her. If she'd even wanted to she wouldn't while being praised. She was too busy being pleased and radiating similar happiness.
His offer caught her attention away from all that though, and she blinked, small smile fading into a faint thoughtful expression. She'd have to think of something more pleasant than her recent illusions had been, just in case it did work. Tormenting the sensei was a no.
Also...his expression. It did imply he'd come here on purpose looking for her or waiting for her...and that bothered her. Her path should have been stealthy, not predictable.
"...Alright, yeah! I'd like to."
no subject
Tormenting her sensei was alright, in his opinion, as long as it was part of training. He believed he could take it, and the goal was to simulate a real life situation. He expected her to give it all she got.
He path hadn't necessarily been predictable, but he'd been darting around himself, and happened to have sensed her presence all around. And so, having worked out a little bit of statistics, Shisui narrowed down four possible stops. It was sheer luck that she paused right above where he was, though.
"Why the pause?" He quirked an eyebrow. "You sure you're ready?" Shisui blew gently against steam, helping it lift faster before he tilted the cup to his lips, all the while watching Sakura over the rim.

He says it's alright, but she wouldn't feel right if he ended up in the hospital due to some disturbing genjutsu she used on him. Some weren't psychologically damaging, but others were aptly termed 'nightmare illusion'. She'd go all out showing him how good she was at using the techniques, and how fast her hand-signs were, but she wasn't about to send his nightmares at him, all the same. As much as she knew that training meant 'going for the kill', a genjutsu was just as effective in the short term whether it were pleasant or vicious.
...That meant he looked impressive now completely by luck and would have overbought dango and tea otherwise. His strategy making skills were therefore...a little worrying.
"I'm ready." She offered him a small, confident smile. "I just had to think of a genjutsu that wouldn't leave you in the hospital when I was done." Okay, maybe the smile was more challenging than confident.
no subject
He did say it was alright. The worst that could happen had already happened to Shisui; he didn't think he could be easily swayed. And he most certainly didn't want her to hold back, because that took the fun out of training and was completely besides the point of the activity. Physically, he had an extremely high tolerance for pain. Mentally, his approach to life itself made it way too easy for him to reason and shelve things away with logic. Emotionally, he was already at his lowest.
But this was Sakura, and he was sure she'd still be able to surprise him.
"Hey." He took another sip, then lowered his cup, flashing her a brilliant smile. "What makes you think you'll succeed in having me end up in hospital at the end of things, hm?" She wanted challenge? Have some challenge.
"I cannot teach you if you hold back. When we're training, I am the enemy, remember?" He paused, taking another sip before bringing the cup down to rest on the tabletop again. "Besides, it's insulting." That last bit was murmured, and he sent her a much softer smile. Gentle admonishment.
no subject
It's really pointless to try to get her to do it. Many things about her were harder than they maybe could have been, but one thing that certainly would never change about her was her compassion. Try to kill him knowing he'd survive? Yes. Ensnaring him in genjutsu, yes. Making him face his darkest nightmares like the genjutsu she was currently practicing? No.
But she did want to show it off. She just wasn't sure how. One had to experience it to fully appreciate it. And no one really should want to do that.
She offered him an amused smile over her own cup. "Old shinobi who exert themselves often end up in the hospital, don't they?"
...That said, his admonishment was taken with lowered eyes, and she set down her cup without drinking, quietly. "I won't hold back, Shishou...but I don't want to use a genjutsu that makes someone suffer when it's my friend underneath the enemy."
Hey, maybe it's time to share what her genjutsu is! That would be a smokescreen to avoid the fact that her genjutsu training technique is unprofessional. "I came up with a new one! I'm still practicing it, but...Ino gave me the idea. It's supposed to read a person's mind and then subject them to their darkest fear. It would leave a person compromised in battle even if the genjutsu were broken or released by someone else."
no subject
"Ah. Veteran shinobi know better than to over-exert themselves." If she was calling him old, then he was twisting it to throw experience back at her. "Usuall, it's the young hot-blooded ones that end up in hospital a lot." He may have sent her a wink, he may have not. It all happened so quickly and his lashes were naturally so long it was almost hard to tell~
He listened to the new technique she had been practicing with interest, though. Only then did he realize the reason behind her unwillingness to go all out on a demonstration of this one. Shisui sent her a smile, still soft, but not in admonishment this time. "You will not know if it'll work unless you try it on someone, Sakura. I have lived past the worst that could happen to me already. I can survive another round of something slightly different."
But he leaned back in his seat, the pad of his finger dragging across the rim of his cup. "But if you're really uncomfortable with going all out, then perhaps I am willing to accept a slightly altered version. We can work out methods to counter a counter-attack, if possible, too."
Because he was going to teach her to try and counter the sharingan, eventually. Better yet, Kotoamatsukami if she could get there. He didn't speak of it to her. Not yet. But deep down inside, that was his goal. It was also intriguing-- working with a counter-attack to Kotoamatsukami. If such advanced genjutsu almost on par with the Uchiha was possible with Toka Senju, then he didn't think it should be an issue to anyone else willing to learn as well.
no subject
"Hmmm is that a compliment, Shishou?" Refusing to be called a hot-blooded kid, yep. She's the one with a reasonable age, he's the one who's getting advanced in years, he just doesn't realize it yet. Probably because he's a little senile, getting kicked in the head so often...
She...realized someone in the war probably saw horrible things, and didn't doubt that. She just didn't want to add to his suffering, okay? So she quickly latched on to his offer. "Counter-attack?"
It's probably best he didn't lead with 'lets learn to counter the Mangekyou', because she'd probably doubt strongly that she could. A dojutsu of equal strength would be required, right? She'd heard sharingan strength talked up quite a bit, given the large Uchiha presence in the village and the hokage having a sharingan (also that one jounin who was supposed to be fierce because of his borrowed sharingan)
no subject
"Young, hot-blooded shinobi also fail to differentiate a compliment from criticism." He grinned. It was gentle criticism, too. Also, since when did he get hit in the head so often if he was usually too fast for most shinobi to make physical contact with at all?
As for war-- yes, he did see his share of horrible things. Some of them were too personal. "Yes, counter-attack. I want you to be able to counter the sharingan at the end of your training. Perhaps..." He shrugged, as if it was no big deal. "Even some advanced techniques." Never specifically uttered the word Mangekyou sharingan, but it was implied.
As for countering the Mangekyou, Shisui had his own theories that he was eager to test out. And her doubt was something he wanted to quell.
"This technique. Does it require prior knowledge of a person's fears or does it do the work by itself?" It intrigued him in that it resembled almost the opposite of a forbidden jutsu special to the Uchiha clan.
no subject
She did in Might Gai's though. No one wanted to touch that.
"Smart, fresh shinobi know how to find the good side of anything." And maybe kicked wasn't right, but he could slam into trees all the time and no one would know, he would recover so quickly!
"Counter...a sharingan? Isn't that impossible without help?" Usually the method for dealing with a sharingan, in the rare or hypothetical situation a Konoha-nin did, was...bring a partner to snap a person out, or sometimes disrupt it in time. There was a reason Uchiha clan was known for its genjutsu, after all.
The Mangekyou Sharingan didn't even occur to her 'advanced techniques' remained a nebulous concept in her head that didn't quite solidify into anything. Maybe it was something like what she did, more likely it was genuinely impressive wide-scale genjutsu.
But that was the theoretical future, and she was interested in showing off her new technique to her teacher. That alone earned her barely restrained beaming. "It works a little like the Yamanaka's techniques." As in...what little she could glean without their secrets and with her own genjutsu skills. "An entry level genjutsu takes hold on a person, that coaxes their fears to the surface, then uses their own chakra and mind to summon it up for them. I think...if enough chakra were used, it could be a place-shifting jutsu, instead of just a lone projection. You know, for people who fear...heights or being lost at sea." Of course, she had no knowledge of this forbidden jutsu. His interest is presumably just because she was a student with a new technique.
no subject
"Mm. Smart, fresh shinobi are usually the ones to die first." Said casually, sipping his tea. Shisui savored the beverage in front of him, as if uttering those words made it sweeter and the tea clearer.
"Traditionally, yes. But the Sharingan isn't magic; every jutsu has a weakness. The key is to understand the technique well enough to recognize its weakness." He set his cup down on the table and leaned forward, arms crossing gracefully on the tabletop. When he spoke, his voice had dropped a few decibels. "The problem with people is that they fear it before they even think about taking the time to analyze it. We've built a reputation for ourselves that our reputation precedes us, but it really isn't fair to give up without even trying." He smiled at her, pausing for a moment before sliding back in his seat and picking up his tea again.
Shisui listened carefully to Sakura's theory. "It sounds almost the exact opposite of something I've heard about..." he muttered, a thin smile creeping up into his lips. His interest just wasn't because she was a student with a new technique. He was pretty darned excited about it.
no subject
"Every old grumpy shinobi was a smart fresh shinobi once." She could do this all day if he wanted. He should really know this about her by now.
She'd like to argue that a Sharingan's weakness was generally understood to be a group of people, and how useless it was if gouged out or physically damaged in some way (and, she'd heard, sometimes its high chakra drain). But...he was both the teacher and the one with a Sharingan. If he believed there were exploitable weaknesses, it was smarter of her to listen to what they were than argue about their existence. Not that it should matter, since it would be extenuating circumstances to ever need to face against one.
But apparently those are secrets for another time. Countering genjutsu cast by other nin should be...both easier and more practical.
She squinted at him curiously. "The opposite...?"
no subject
"Mm. Every older shinobi was a smart, fresh shinobi once, yes. But they never declared they were better than their seniors." He sent her a smile that was somewhat lacking amusement. Circumstances pulled him back to the reason why he'd decided to teach her to counter the Sharingan in the first place, and he looked almost lost in thought at that moment.
Facing against one was going to be a rare circumstance indeed, but Shisui feared something else. His gaze casually flit about the room, picking up on the people around them, gauging what each one was doing. Keeping his eyes and ears open for anyone else doing the same about their conversation.
When he didn't detect an immediate threat, Shisui casually reached for his cup and brought it up to his lips to sip on the somewhat cooled bit of tea he had left in it. He didn't speak of what bothered him in front of her, though. It was always better to keep political affairs out while in the midst of a shop full of people.
Not that he was likely to share with her what it was when they left the place, either. This was probably conversation for Itachi. And later, perhaps, Obito.
He looked back to her and nodded. "The opposite. I'll tell you all about it another day." With that, he pushed his empty cup to the middle of the table and sat back, smiling despite faraway concerns, waiting for her to finish.
