Test Drive Post!

Sunshineverse
Okay everyone, it's time to test some people out! The rules of the game are simple. You have a character you would like to try out as a native to the setting of this game. You want to see if this is the right setting to play said character in, right?

Well, then all you have to do is drop them into this post as a top level comment with this as the header:
Character name | Series (OC's just put Original here) | Planned Village Affiliation

Then you comment around and play with everyone else!

If you need some ideas on how to get started, you can drop your character in during the middle of a mission, have them at an eatery around their village, or maybe even just doing weapons practice. It's up to you how you want to set out, so feel free to put your characters in this version of the Naruto universe however it most seems appropriate. Just be sure to say where you put them somewhere in your post though, otherwise two people might not even be threading in the same country.

One last thing! Remember that your character was born in this universe, so whatever else you decide, your character is a world native, even if they might be a tourist in the village you decided to test them out on.

And that's it. Just be good to each other and have fun! Threads you do here can count toward future activity checks, so long as the person you're threading with gets in too. These threads can also be used for samples on your application.

If only he knew how willing she was to join him in leaving. But then no one knew and that was the point. She couldn't stand the regime at present, would love nothing more than to tear it down and rebuild from it's ashes. She and so many others of the village don't have clean enough hands to be able to rebuild something nicer, less destructive and dark. But it would be a start, even if it was just in the smallest shift in attitudes.

"Most likely," she never stayed long if she could help it. Staying meant risking her sanity and getting far to wrapped up in the deceit that ran so thick at home. It was like a poison that eventually made it's way into everyone. "Perhaps there will be an opportunity for us to work together." There's a sort of lighteness to her tone then. Almost as if the idea pleases her. She can't say she's had many opportunities where their skill sets allow for such a team up.

Assuming of course she didn't get sentenced to another two week long intelligence mission. She was so sick of hiding in her shadows and listening to mostly pointless conversations. That seemed to be the mission desks new favorite assignment for her; she wouldn't mind it so much if they weren't so tedious.

He was about to reply to that comment but-- his blade! First things first then. Up into the air went Samehada, and Kisame's hands flew through seals. It wasn't an uncommon Water Release, and good for precision work. However, there was no water source nearby large enough to support it.

On the other hand, Kisame was a Hoshigaki, and while this wasn't his preferred method to soak the battlefield, he could still use his chakra to create the water he needed. So out of his mouth shot a blast of water... aimed at the sword. After that, Kisame let the jutsu end, and another seal turned the water puddling on the ground into another pair of water clones. They converged on Utakata, doing their best to avoid the bubbles and attack.

"Aim your acid at me, Utakata-san, not the blade. You shouldn't disrespect a blade in that way."

Any further words were cut off by trying not to get hit by the bubbles. He could take the damage, certainly, and Samehada would repair it, but he wanted to give the sword a taste of the enemy's chakra first to make the sword more biddable.

And then Utakata was running. Of course. Kisame couldn't rush, not with those bubbles in the way, and the other man was quite speedy.

Maybe he could slow the man down a little with words while he got through the obstacle. "You say that as if it hadn't already! Where could I go, Utakata-san? I don't drift well."

Uncomfortably close to the truth that he should not be spreading, but it might bring a pause, and who would believe a missing-nin anyway?

Kisame wasn't exactly expecting one to happen, but one could never be too prepared for treachery. It happened far too often, especially in Kiri.

"We do have a particular look; that's true! And what history do you know of my clan?"

Kisame was used to fielding questions about his clan from those outside Kiri, and even some inside, though they should know better, and found that the best defense was deflection. If the man was recounting what he knew, he wouldn't be asking things of Kisame. And it never hurt to know the current rumors about the clan!

....Well. He was all set to dodge that blast and it missed him? The awareness he possessed of his bubbles (necessary to manipulate them) made it clear the water went to the...blade.

Unexpected, that. "Bubbles are drawn to wet surfaces. I can't really help if your blade draws them when it's wet." That's a lie, but true of bubbles that weren't his, so perhaps his opponent would believe that he had less control of them than he truly did.

It was a minor thing, but any advantage was necessary, at the moment.

Although it might appear that he slowed at those words of Kisame's, it was for a good reason. He could only go so fast and secrete enough acidic ooze on the ground to stick someone Kisame's size, and it needed not to be too much or it wouldn't do its job, as it would be visible and obvious. If Kisame believed it was due to the words instead, though, more's the better.

"We learn to drift with practice." He glanced over his shoulder to observe the man as he moved. His bubbles would have kept him informed enough of the man's position, but...call him curious of the man's expression. Expressions told more truths than words, anyway.

After a moment of judging distance, he spun on his heel and stepped back onto one of his bubbles. Rather than bursting, it simply engulfed him and floated into the air. For the moment, his momentum carried the bubble backward as well at a fair pace. The concept some had that he could only float at the speed of the breeze was, obviously, wrong. If he was willing to expend the chakra to move the bubble on his own, he could move at a much more efficient speed. It wasn't the speed of his sprint, but with most shinobi, a flight through the air was usually more effective than hoping that they lacked the sensory abilities to track him in the forests.

For the clones that were closest to him...he snapped his fingers, setting off half of the bubbles at once in a grand explosion. The others, nearer to who he believed to be the original Kisame, remained as obstacles, but as for clones...he hoped that would at least prevent them from reaching him before he was too far into the sky for most jutsu to affect.

Once he was no longer sprinting, his voice returned to that same lax, conversational tone as he called out to the shark. "Even if it's drifting, a life full of honest threats of death is better than a life full of people pretending to care only as long as it takes to discard you. Don't you think?"

Well, perhaps it was only him...but at least he had his freedom, and no 'master's to betray him.

"The other two did," Sasuke answered, shooting Hoderi a glare that earned him what was probably the avian equivalent of a disdainful sniff. "This one was lazy and got started late, so we got caught by the rain."

... which was maybe something he shouldn't be admitting, evidence that sounded like he had limited control over his own summons at the moment. At this rate he had to wonder if they'd even listen to him in a fight, though it wasn't likely he'd be using them in a fight any time soon given how young they were. The idea of any of them getting hurt out of inexperience, however much of a pain they could be at times, was an annoying one.

Attempting to change the subject from himself, he looked around for an umbrella for a moment before concluding: "You got caught by the storm as well, Father?"

It was perhaps unfair for Sasuke to wonder exactly why Kiri-nin were suddenly crawling all over the place, but given Adela's cousin this past summer and the missing- and hunter-nin they'd run into just last month, he wasn't past chalking this up to conspiracy. He'd split from his teammate for this mission just a few hours ago, both of them canvassing two different towns for a likely spot to gather information, but he was beginning to wish he had backup.

Not that there was any formal call for aggression between a Kiri-nin and Konoha-nin whose paths just happened to cross in an out-of-the-way town. Outside of the borders of both their villages and countries, this was probably neutral ground on technicality.

Still, Sasuke kept his chakra suppressed as he trailed the tall (and blue, which was apparently not weird in these parts) man's steps, keeping to crowded areas in order to have the excuse of souvenir-shopping if he was spotted.

There's some lovely tea from that area, Mikoto had said, catching him on his way out, before adjusting his flak vest and trying to flatten his hair out of reflexive habit. Some hints were as good as orders, Sasuke thought with a sigh that was less put-upon than it was guilty: it hadn't even occurred to him how empty the house had probably been this past year, with his own missions lengthening and Itachi rarely home. Given the state of the garden the last time he'd seen it, Mikoto was probably bored out of her mind.

Tea wouldn't really help with that, but with gift-giving season approaching it couldn't hurt to be stocked up. He was sniffing his way through samples when front door of the cramped shop blew open, letting in a blast of chilly air and a rather washed-out looking man before shutting again.

Said blast of wind was enough for the precariously-balanced shelf, apparently. Sasuke took a startled step back when it wobbled, reaching out a hand to steady it that turned out to be of little use as the entire thing shook again, then collapsed in a wash of dry tea leaves over him and the newcomer alike.

At least Iruka wasn't directly letting unruly students burn down walls. Fugaku glanced at the rain, which had more or less let up. He wouldn't get soaked, anyway.

"I should be going." Before Mikoto sent out a search party for him, or came herself.

[personal profile] disgruntledmountain 2014-11-24 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)

It seemed the kitten had lured her over, not any desire to talk business or any news. Fugaku held back a sigh and checked to make sure the other kitten was still in its basket. "They are for mousing," Fugaku said firmly, unwilling to let even the slightest rumor that he would have cats "for fun" get around.

Especially when the current cats he was carting around looked nothing like mousers and more like something that belonged in a knitting basket. Maybe he should have lobbied harder for taking in one of the stray toms in the area. At the moment these were rather uselessly adorable, stuck in the "I'm cute, don't eat me" phase of life.

disgruntledmountain: (Default)

[personal profile] disgruntledmountain 2014-11-24 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)

Fugaku didn't smile, but the corner of his lip twitched. This was still the paternal amusement at Sasuke managing something younger and more inexperienced than he was. If the other two had hunted well, it didn't seem fair to blame Sasuke for the other's failure, though he wouldn't learn anything if all his summons fell into line to easily. Sasuke needed a challenge to push him. Fugaku had stopped expecting Sasuke to be Itachi (and the more time went on the more he thought it was better for everyone that Sasuke wasn't like Itachi), but that didn't mean he expected anything but excellence from Sasuke, or thought he should take it easy with his training--or his training of others.

It seemed rather obvious that Fugaku had gotten caught in the rain, but he would take the comment as a conversation piece, not Sasuke being unable to deduce that was what had happened. Fugaku wasn't sure why someone would stop for tea with kittens anyway. They were a fairly standard "take this straight home" purchase. He really should have brought a box for them.

Fugaku nodded. Normally his hip predicted the weather with alarming accuracy, but this freak shower had escaped it. "I was. The rain will, at least, make it easier to dig a bed for the bulbs." Fugaku was assuming those needed to be planted soon, though he didn't know if they would have to languish until spring before they were placed in the ground.

Utakata's mind wasn't on gift-giving. The only person in the world he might consider giving a gift to (besides maybe Tonbee if he had to...) was probably much too busy adjusting to her new life and hunting down some person willing to be a master to want gifts from him anyway. And he didn't have money to buy things that weren't for him. The life of a missing nin as wanted as him didn't involve a lot of payments.

Well it did, just not to him.

Life as a missing nin jinchuuriki tended to be about like walking into a tea shop for supplies only to have an entire shelf full of dried tea dump on top of oneself for no apparent reason. That was to say abrupt, unpleasant, and completely uncalled for.

As for himself, at least, he had the time to summon up a bubble and deflect the dried tea leaves. Once it seemed apparent the shelf would no longer spill any more tea, the bubble sloughed off the leaves that had begun to clump and collect on the damp surface, and then popped.

...He directed a scornful look at the boy standing next to him. "You should try not to be so active in a place like this." Because he saw the kid putting his hand on the shelf and then he saw it fall, so the answer was...unfortunate timing.

"I would enjoy that. It's been a while!" Kisame smiled back, and it was an honest one instead of his usual grins. He paused for several steps, wondering what kind of mission would benefit the most from them working together.

"I haven't been picky about missions in a while; I can use that to my advantage in making a request, eh?" He knew he had more clout, at least technically, and that he and the Mizukage played a delicate balancing game of keeping him contained and letting him work his fullest for the village. He'd been careful not to let his annoyance and frustration with all the lies and politics turn visible for a while, and had been perfectly obedient to the letter of every mission and order, so he had some leeway, if only a little.

"Anything you'd like to not be assigned, Rui-san?"

"It depends on what else needs tending to." Whether his information was sufficient or whether it would create another lead he had to follow.

Though, the chance of Obito deciding it was enough and taking him off missions was rather high. Obito tended to worry, a lot, and he had the power to do something about it.

Sometimes Fugaku thought he had brought this on himself. When Itachi was younger, Fugaku hadn't kept a very close eye on him. Itachi was either off training or running missions or at the Academy, so there wasn't much need for Fugaku to monitor the boy as long as he was progressing as a ninja. If he was doing as he should, why make him check in or worry if he were out late or things like that? Now Fugaku had a child grown to a man Fugaku rarely saw, more rarely heard from, and quite often he was sure he didn't even know if Itachi was injured or recovering from something. Itachi was much like a cat, coming and going as he pleased, when he pleased, without a please or thank you or "would you like me to do anything for you while I'm here?"

"If you have time..." Fugaku paused, watching his son's face closely during that pause. "The roof needs some work."

On hearing that lie, for the first time Kisame actually scowled. He wasn't well-versed, but that kind of technique almost certainly required a great deal of control. Also his blade hadn't been that wet. "Don't lie; it's unbecoming a shinobi of your stature."

And the fact that Utakata would sacrifice so much of his defense just for a pair of clones put Kisame on edge. There must be a trap somewhere, but where? In what could be taken as frustration he swiped Samehada at some of the bubbles. It wasn't nearly as effective as it would be before the chakra was molded into a technique, but there would still be chakra there for Samehada to taste.

He had to push himself backwards when one exploded, and Samehada wailed and shredded the bandages when another splashed acid, but really it was nothing worse than what he'd expected. Now that Samehada had had a taste, maybe he could afford to stay a little farther back; let the man's guard come down while he allowed Samehada to track the chakra and wait until an opportune moment to spring a trap and capture.

The blade grumbled again, mouth coming open, and Kisame shook his head at it. "I apologize for the acid, eh? But I'll take care of you later. First let's catch this one."

That made the sword brighten and gurgle more happily, and Kisame turned his attention to the retreating bubble, resting the now not very sword-like thing on his shoulder.

"They only care about my usefulness as a weapon for Kiri, Utakata-san. I have never imagined otherwise, not even of my own master. My mistake was trusting him to be Kiri's weapon as well and falling prey to the lies. And every blade needs a wielder, no matter how negligent, even my Samehada. No, I could not learn to drift like you. There may be somewhere out there that could wield me as I should be, but until then, Kiri will have my loyalty."

It was almost satisfying to say it out loud, because it was true. Disturbingly true, because a good shinobi didn't think that way of his village, but Kisame wasn't going to take it back, and the first statement had gotten a reaction.

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2014-11-25 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Kisame was very used to tails, being that there was usually at least one ANBU dogging his steps in Kirigakure proper, and it didn't take him long to notice the same ... hair in all the places he was wandering around seemingly aimlessly in.

He let the tail follow him a little longer without giving sign of being aware, because he wasn't doing anything but checking out shops and the other amenities the town offered. He was technically supposed to move on quickly, and probably shouldn't have chosen to travel on foot, but that was excusable enough--wouldn't want to get soft!--and there wasn't a time limit on the documents themselves. But the tail was sticking with him, and it was getting tedious.

He'd just have to lose the tail, or force a confrontation. The first was more subtle, but the last was more fun. He'd have to consider how to do it carefully though, so to give himself time to think, Kisame ducked into a promising looking cafe. He went right to one of the tables near the back wall, so that he could watch all the exits with his back fairly protected, like many shinobi would do, and ordered a cup of tea while he considered the small menu.

While perusing, he kept an eye on the window, wondering how his tail would deal with this development. The servers all seemed nervous, but that would probably mean faster service so Kisame carefully ignored their frightened glances and whispering.

Mm, they were offering what could be a tasty fish dish, but this far from the ocean... Kisame decided on simple soba instead, and order made, sat back, for all appearances with eyes closed, to wait.

Now what, little shadow-san?

So would she. Missions where she got work with shinobi of his level were always some of the most interesting. And well working with Kisame was always it's own sort of fun regardless of the task. granted there had only been a few, but she'd enjoyed the challenge of those missions.

Rui tilts her head. She hadn't expected him to make the suggestion. Not that she'll turn it down. Anything was better than going through the motions of returning home while waiting for her next assignment. If Kisame thought he could swing a mission for them she'd take it. Almost jump at the opportunity.

"Anything that keeps us still for long periods of time. I've had enough of those missions to last a while."
noboatbigenough: (You're cute. ...Still gonna kill you.)

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2014-11-25 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
"We can manage that. I can think of a few mission types that encourage travel and movement." His first thought was A rank, but B would probably be better for a pair like them.

Looking forward to the upcoming mission had his steps lighten and his stride increase a little. "We might have to wait a few days for something suitable to cross the desk, but I'm sure I can convince the staff to hold a likely mission aside for us."

Convince, intimidate; it ended up more of the same, really. Kisame hoped it would be a long mission. Some time away from Kiri in the company of one of the few he actually enjoyed the company of, as much as possible, would be welcome. A shame adding Sephiroth to the mix would probably make all the higher ups balk and send up too many alarm bells.
shadowempress: (pic#8543799)

[personal profile] shadowempress 2014-11-25 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Mhm, I'll take just about anything." It feels like it's been ages since she last had a mission that afforded her the opportunity to get out and stretch her legs regularly. The exact rank only secondary at the moment.

But the lightness she can relate to. It's hardly an inconvenience to spend a few days in Kiri with the prospect of leaving not long after that on the horizon. If anything it would make the short stay that much more bearable. "I don't doubt it Kisame-san."

And why should she, one didn't get the nickname of Kirigakure's Monster for no reason at all. Funny how once the moniker scared her like a boogeyman, and now it was merely a facet. If they were lucky it would be a minimum of a week long, but longer wouldn't go unwelcomed. It was probably all they could do to get this mission without a great deal of suspicion. There were reasons they rarely crossed paths for missions. The main line being what would the point be when on your own each could do a great deal more for the village as a whole.

"What would you want for the mission?"

"Not another intelligence mission!" Kisame said that brightly, laughing, but there was definite feeling behind it. He couldn't really avoid those missions, really, given his involvement in the Cypher Division, but they were his least favorite. Most, he couldn't even reveal he'd done, but the last couple had been pretty low clearance, more like scouting than real intelligence missions.

He paused a moment. "I'd enjoy a mission where I got some real fighting in, but I'll take what's available, the more straightforward, the better."

It would be a relief not to have to pretend or posture, or keep track of hidden as well as official objectives. The last mission had had too much posturing for his taste, and hadn't even ended in much of a fight. Civilian thugs made such poor opponents.

[personal profile] tearsofsnow 2014-11-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
He's no more than a civilian in the streets of Kirigakure. A nice woman with a kind smile and polite words that's all too rare in their harsh village. Where it snows and splashes of blood mar an otherwise beautiful world.

He sells herbs in a medicinal shop, finds that the shinobi are often wary of the hospital and would rather risk a simple poultice than seek advanced medical attention. Still, he gently offers the suggestion and worries about some of them as they limp out of the shop. They don't have many repeat customers, and those that do come back are usually charmed by his feminine looks. It doesn't bother him, even encourages the notion by dressing in a nice kimono when he goes out because he draws far less attention if everyone assumes he is exactly who he appears to be.

But today the owner tells him they're in need of a resupply in his own gruff, roundabout fashion, and Haku smiles an agreement. Basket in hand, he wanders out past the third ring and waves himself through the village gate with a short laugh. The world always seems simpler outside those walls, but it's still just as dangerous. It's an unfortunate state of affairs, and he keeps the same watchful eye on his surroundings as he wanders into the forest.

[ooc: Feel free to catch him in the village or outside of it, maybe even visiting a foreign nation to gather rare herbs if anyone has trouble justifying a trip to Kirigakure. Also a warning that tags will be slow!]

He'd ended up close to Kiri on his way back from a trip to one of the islands to the far east, a trip where he'd spent a whole lot of time on a boat, and he was glad to just be back on solid land. Admittedly, he was taking a meandering path which brought him to the forest, but he still didn't expect to come across anyone, so doing so had him slowing, hanging back in case he needed to bolt.

Visually harmless never meant actually harmless in his experience, and he waited to see if he'd even be spotted before drawing any attention to himself.

Haku knelt in the grass, the lingering frost seeping into his kimono, but paying it no mind. Soon, he'd have to travel outside of the country to keep up on their herb stock. The weather was starting to turn too cold for the plants to last much longer and the shop owner was a frugal man.

And while his senses weren't the keenest, he was on quiet alert and there was a kunai up his sleeve. He offered a small smile at the blonde man on the edge of the treeline.

It's been a slow in-between-missions day today, which means only a couple hours growling in frustration in poorly completed paperwork, and sighing at the current intelligence reports. Still he's been up since well before dawn, checking in with the other active members of the Seven, and several hours of training before that. Kisame could head to the training fields to do more work, but he's feeling contained. Trapped.

And as useful as training fields can be, he can't always rely on well cared for grounds, so he goes out of the gates, giving nods at the guards. The one that doesn't flinch might have promise; he'll have to look more into that one later.

Except it's less actual training right now than walking around and enjoying the cool mist against his skin, so Kisame is mildly surprised when Samehada suddenly shifts in its wrappings. Another shinobi out here training? He's off the road, so probably not someone returning from a mission.

Intrigued, Kisame turns towards the direction Samehada showed the most reaction toward and walks. It doesn't take long to find the source of the sword's activity, but Kisame isn't sure what to make of what he sees.

Young, small, and dressed like a civilian. The kid doesn't look strong, but appearances could be deceiving. Camouflage is its own offense. Well, part of it would be the reaction to one of the Seven, now wouldn't it?

"Enjoying the day? Or," Kisame pauses and tilts his head to the side, "on an errand, kid?"

Haku starts, and it shows in the way he looks up too quickly and his fingers freeze mid-motion. He doesn't know the man's name, but that sword and outfit make him recognizable as one of Kirigakure's elite Seven Swordsmen. A powerful potential adversary, one he's not sure even his bloodline could stand up against. He forces a smile through a rapid heartbeat and tries to concentrate on the plants in front of him.

"Why not both?" he queries with an attempt at humor. He can't afford to make enemies. "I'm collecting some herbs for the shop. Our supply is starting to run low and the frost is setting in, so it's time to salvage what we can before the snow follows."
