The NPC Meme

I'm sure someone knows their names...

Welcome to the NPC meme! This meme has certain special rules and functions unlike many other memes! In this meme, the NPC journal isn't just encouraged, it's how you play. Or, at least...how someone involved in the thread does.

The premise is simple: You post your character to lure in some characters who aren't currently being played, and someone else brings in the NPC journal with their interpretation of that character. You play a thread! CR gaps filled!

Alternatively, if you have a character you might be interested in playing in the capacity of an NPC (such as a character you don't want to app, and thus put in a test drive, for one reason or another) then post a top level for that NPC.

Currently played characters may tag out only to NPC top level comments, not to each other. NPC characters could tag to anyone. However, since threads in this meme are eligible for AC (and therefore game canon), it's best for NPCs to tag current characters, rather than other NPCs.

Steps/Rules

1: Post a top level with either your character or an NPC you'd like to play for the meme (Using the NPC account!) - If you're looking for someone specific to tag you, be sure to include it in the top level somewhere so people know to bring them.

2: With your characters, tag out to NPC top-levels or wait for an NPC to tag you. With NPCs, tag out to top level 'current' character threads, or respond to characters that tag your NPC of choice.

3: Thread things that can't yet be played out, or might never be able to be played out!

4: When playing an NPC, since you'll be using the NPC account to do it, don't forget to track the thread with one of your own accounts! (If you have a paid, at least. For free accounts, it's still recommended that you track at least the entire post so you don't miss anything!)

That was pretty different from usual, yeah. Sakura was aware from personal experience that, large or small, Konoha's many and varied clans could be pretty eccentric. Knowing that, and some of the eccentricities of certain clans she was familiar with...she still had no idea what the six customers in the middle of the shop were actually doing when she walked in, nor why they looked so riled up.

Ino looked annoyed enough that she probably understood, though. Maybe it made sense to someone who'd seen it from the start. She frowned, lingering in the doorway for the moment. "Do you need a hand...?" She was there, after all. If people needed to be thrown out, there was no reason she couldn't be part of throwing them out.

If she were aware of the identity of the man sitting in the tea house, she would have undoubtedly fussed and fought more with the owner who shooed and ushered her to sit at the table next to him. She'd intended simply to stop for something before she went out for a training session...but evidently she'd arrived just as the tea shop was at its rush. She could see a couple of other open seats in the house that were not so close to other patrons, but presumably those were already reserved for other people. Or the owner had reason to believe she was somehow associated with the older man sitting near to her, but as she didn't recognize him at all, that was vanishingly unlikely.

His injuries and the way he sat indicated he was most likely an old, retired ninja, rather than one of the tea house's civilian clientele, but there were enough other nin in the building that she wouldn't have been stuck near to him simply by virtue of them both having had the same profession in life.

It probably didn't bear thinking about. She was displeased that she was encroaching on the old shinobi's space...but there seemed no overt intentions behind it other than space conservation...so the best thing to do would be to give the man a respectful and quiet nod, and turn her attention to waiting on the server. The sooner that she finished, the sooner she could leave the quiet man in whatever peace he may have wanted.

"Certainly," Nanako agreed, smoothly turning to the source of the shout, as if tending to the whims of the elderly was her sole purpose in life and the village hierarchy, instead of breaking people and prying out secrets. Her expression shifted from kindly and concerned to warmly delighted and very much less concerned. "Hoshigaki-sama! What an unexpected pleasure."

She had met the woman exactly twice before, both times when she had tagged along to watch her grandmother hit up the older clan head for a spar. It had been inspiring to watch, that level of destruction, and left her with no small amount of hope for her own abilities as she got older.

Nanako was similarly taking the chance to nose around after being buried in her own projects, though as a consequence she was decidedly more in the know when it came to current events. And her vacation days had piled up, but that was a minor detail, really.

She had a few guards loosely scattered around the town, but they knew to give her space. It was a foolish man indeed who intruded on her rare picnics. especially when she had a new mystery novel to sink her teeth into.

"Oh, you flatter me, ma'am," she laughed, falling into step with her elder. Well. Her co-worker's elder, at least. "I'm hardly as little these days." She was nearly twenty-nine, after all. Some of her relatives had been sending her omiai portfolios as of late, but her dear children had taken to tearing the candidates apart through thorough background checks.

"I do know the feeling. Sometimes on vacation, some of my dear shadows get so upset when I find a nice quiet corner all to myself. But, a lady is due her privacy and pleasure in turn, after all." Her smile turned a touch... well, it would be conspirator, if Nanako was capable of it. It managed a certain slyness, at the very least. "I'm sure Kisame-kun will keep them, ah, calm in your absence."

Nanako had noticed him almost as soon as he had stepped into her range. It wasn't normally difficult to identify a shinobi who was banking their chakra signature, but he twisted and folded his own in as easily as creasing an origami crane. If it weren't for the necessity of noting even the most minor fluctuations in chakra on the interrogation table, Nanako might have taken much longer to notice him.

As it was, she had the chance to finish her current chapter by the time he was in speaking distance. She gently closed the book, place mentally marked, and tilted her head to one side. "May I help you, sir?" Her eyes appeared to be still and unruffled in the slightest, even as she drank in any and every detail she could gleam from his appearance.

She...was a little surprised when he spoke up, clearly addressing her. After all, conversation wasn't really necessary, even if their proximity made it almost so. Then again, perhaps he was as uncertain as she was by her seating (it wasn't likely to be his decision, given he referred to her as 'girl') and thought she knew?

Whether perfunctory or curious, her response was the same, glancing over in his direction and responding in a polite voice. "Sir." Whether it was appropriate to call him 'sir' by whatever his rank was before his retirement or not, he had markings about him to indicate it was an appropriate method to refer to him by anyway.

"Kisame-kun is incredibly skilled all on his own merit," she demurred. "It's just a different type of kata, really. Like a feint, mixed with strategy." One thing that was refreshing about speaking with a Hoshigaki was that they didn't need much time to grasp basic martial metaphors. Fighting was breathing to them, similar to the Shishito mindset.

Well, perhaps she was a little responsible for the tiny change in Kisame, though his adaptive nature was an explanation in and of itself. It was just a side-effect of their careers, now.

Oh, were they civilians? Looking at them now she could see they didn't wear anything to indicate they were shinobi. Which was a shame, because she could just cast a group genjutsu on them if they were. Ah well, between the two of them they could handle three loud civilians without breaking any rules (or laws).

She sighed softly and made her way across the room, stepping into the middle of the group and...slinging the smallest one over her shoulder. That was one down, now for the other two near to her. While doing that, she spoke in a voice that wasn't so much bored and uninterested as...unruffled. Even if they were six, they weren't exactly a threat, after all, just troublesome. "If you're going to fight, you need to do it outside. You'll upset the daimyo and his wife if you destroy the flowers meant for his banquet tonight."
