Test Drive Post!

Sunshineverse
Okay everyone, it's time to test some people out! The rules of the game are simple. You have a character you would like to try out as a native to the setting of this game. You want to see if this is the right setting to play said character in, right?

Well, then all you have to do is drop them into this post as a top level comment with this as the header:
Character name | Series (OC's just put Original here) | Planned Village Affiliation

Then you comment around and play with everyone else!

If you need some ideas on how to get started, you can drop your character in during the middle of a mission, have them at an eatery around their village, or maybe even just doing weapons practice. It's up to you how you want to set out, so feel free to put your characters in this version of the Naruto universe however it most seems appropriate. Just be sure to say where you put them somewhere in your post though, otherwise two people might not even be threading in the same country.

One last thing! Remember that your character was born in this universe, so whatever else you decide, your character is a world native, even if they might be a tourist in the village you decided to test them out on.

And that's it. Just be good to each other and have fun! Threads you do here can count toward future activity checks, so long as the person you're threading with gets in too. These threads can also be used for samples on your application.

"Good to meet you too, Hoshigaki-san." He nods, and he was diving anyway so he might as well dive with Kisame. Naoki slips the knife securely into his sheath and kicks forward onto his stomach to look down.

He takes a deep breath, curls up and straightens out, using gravity to help start his dive. He's accustomed enough to the feel of sea water in his eyes, and he's always found the light he gives off to be more useful navigating underwater than above. Naoki pauses at the hole that held an octopus earlier to notice it's vacant now, so he continues down.

The gentle swaying motion of plants along the bottom is easy to see in this light, and he can see other shapes. Shrimp and crabs and the usual nocturnal sea life, but none of the larger dark shapes he occasionally sees on the edge of his vision.

He raises an eyebrow and snorts at the use of his clan name after he gave his. It's always funny to hear it, like they don't know there are at least ten other Hoshigaki in the active ranks alone. But it's not worth sparing an actual comment on, so Kisame watches the kid dive and follows easily.

He turns to keep as much an eye on the kid as their surroundings, gills working, and yes, the glow is pleasant down here. Just enough light to be comfortable and see clearly. Kisame blinks the nictitating membranes down and stretches out to get ahead a little. He turns to watch the kid's form from the front. Not bad.

There aren't many predators out right now, but Kisame knows at least some of the predators are able to sense enough of chakra to be frightened away. Just as some others are attracted. The night ocean is peaceful enough, though there's always violence beneath the surface.

Along the bottom he spots an ambush predator buried in the sand. It could be a lot of different things, and Kisame decides not to disturb it just to check.

Naoki raises an eyebrow as Kisame swims in front to watch him, but otherwise keeps his eyes on his surroundings as he follows the edge of the rock formation. There's a fairly nondescript crevice and Naoki slows down to approach it, waving a hand out and down but still at a safe distance in case it was occupied.

It's empty, so Naoki turns away from it, stopping to watch a crab scuttling dangerously towards a predator hidden in the sand. Nothing out right now needs light to hunt, but he doubts the crab will notice in time to get away.

The kid is cautious with approaching places where something dangerous might be. Kisame approves, and takes a moment to look around. He spots the crab and his half tempted to catch it for a meal, but it's too small to be worth the effort. So instead he watches with interest to see if the crab or the predator wins the little contest that's about to happen.

At the same time, he keeps attention on Naoki, appreciating the extra light that doesn't hurt his eyes.

The predator hiding under the sand turns out to be a large flounder, which becomes apparent when it gobbles up the crab. The easiest way to catch it would be to throw one of the kunai he brought, but Naoki drifts along carefully, barely moving.

When he's right over the fish he grabs it by its side, using a little chakra to hold onto the slippery fish as it kicks up sand and tries to get away.

He watches in amusement as Naoki goes on the hunt, approving of the extra mile in catching it by hand. The stillness is given an appreciative nod, and Kisame gestures a quick sign—the simple ones most young Kiri-nin are taught for underwater work, and not the Hoshigaki’s own version—indicating ‘good catch.’

Now, of course, Naoki needs to decide what to do with it.

Naoki grins a little at the familiar handsign, holding the large fish and keeping himself steady as it thrashes. He was more interested in just catching it than anything else, so he holds it out and kicks a little closer to Kisame. It's too large to just kill it and use it to lure in and feed another predator, so if Kisame doesn't want it, he'll let it go.

The rule back when he'd been at the academy was that you had to fend for yourself, but this isn't survival training or a childish game.

Kisame is slightly surprised at the gift of the fish, but if the kid is going to give it to him, he won't waste the catch. One of his summons is especially fond of flounder. So he signs 'hold still.'

A moment later a flick of his thumb across his thumb spills blood into the water, and he summons. The shark is small, for a tiger shark, and swims around Kisame in happy circles, happy to have been summoned. Kisame's smile goes a little more fond than his usual grins which promise violence, and he pets the shark along the nose and gills, making her wriggle in pleasure.

Then he uses the Hoshigaki signs to tell her that the kid got her a present, and not to take the kid's hands off in the process.

With that, the shark is swimming straight towards Naoki very fast, mouth open and teeth gleaming.

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-03-28 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
He waits and watches, keeping his eye on the shark Kisame summons. That is definitely easier than trying to lure something in, and while he never thought of petting a shark like that, it's clear the shark enjoys it.

The signs aren't ones Naoki recognizes, and the sight of a shark swimming right at him like that causes a rush of adrenaline. He wastes no time getting as much space between himself and the fish as possible, bracing his feet against the sea floor in case he needs to push away quickly.

He's fed enough animals to know that sometimes they get a little enthusiastic eating an offered treat.

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2015-03-28 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Kisame is actually impressed that Naoki holds still and doesn't let the fish go, not that his summons couldn't catch it, and smiles and nods his approval.

The shark, for her part, does take care not to injure Naoki when she bites on down on the struggling fish. Naoki is then left with half a bloody fish in his hands and she nudges at him, trying to get him to let it go so she can snap up the rest.

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-03-28 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Naoki is more than happy to let go of the fish, what's left of it, and pull his hands back. He grins at Kisame, and since he doesn't know how to sign 'can I pet your shark', he makes the signs for danger, fish, then mimes petting the hand used to make the fish sign followed by indicating himself and then the general request for a yes or no response.

He'll need to surface soon, but he's still got time.

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2015-03-28 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's a little awkward of a way to say it but Kisame is able to put together what Naoki wants. He lets a couple bubbles of air escape his mouth in a signal for laughter and gestures to the shark. She returns to his side, to swim in a slow circle around him, so she can use her gills properly.

Kisame then signs 'yes' back at Naoki, then 'watch.'

He demonstrates how to do it so that her denticles won't tear or otherwise damage skin, and then gestures for Naoki to come closer so he can try for himself.

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-03-28 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
He waits and watches as instructed while Kisame demonsrates how to pet a shark. When he gets the go-ahead, he xloses the distance between them once more. Not knowing if the shark knows the standard Kiri signs taught at the academy, he forgoes greeting the shark and carefully copies the motions he was shown.

Shark skin is an odd combination of smooth and rough, and while he's touched sharks before, he's never been around a friendly shark before.
noboatbigenough: (This is my good side.)

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2015-03-28 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
The shark likes the attention, wriggling to show her happiness as they both pet her. Kisame is content to keep doing it until Naoki needs to go back up for air, which he guesses will be sometime soon.

Giving his summon attention is relaxing and almost an automatic motion, so Kisame takes the time to look at the markings in more detail.
withfocus: (pic#8916515)

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-03-28 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
The happy wiggling makes Naoki smile and let exhale a couple bubbles of amusement. He keeps petting and rubbing, splitting his attention between the shark, Kisame, and their surroundings. With both of them petting the shark, he's careful to keep their hands from touching.

After another minute of making friends with the shark and being observed by Kisame, Naoki pulls his hands back and makes the somewhat obvious and reduntant gesture that he needs air. He doesn't push off from the bottom, but carefully puts space between himself and the shark before swimming back to thesurface.
noboatbigenough: (Might be a cunning linguist.)

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2015-03-28 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Kisame nods, not surprised, and dismisses the shark. He follows Naoki up at a relaxed pace and exhales a long breath of stale air from his lungs at the surface. His gills don't quite provide enough oxygen to sustain him long term, so that first breath always feels especially good.

He then looks Naoki over in approval. "Not bad, and an impressive catch there."
withfocus: (pic#8916508)

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-03-28 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
He takes a few slow, deep breaths to get oxygen back into his system after holding his breath. Free diving is an important skill for Kiri-nin, so it's good to stay in practice. "Thanks. It's easier to catch fish that think they're hidden."

He takes a couple more deep breaths before his breathing goes back to normal. "Your shark was nice."
noboatbigenough: (You're cute. ...Still gonna kill you.)

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2015-03-30 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Easier to catch ninja too, eh?" It's a little bit of teasing, but also a reminder for Naoki to work to improve himself.

He thinks this kid has a great deal of potential, if being a little too trusting at the same time. 'Nice.' That was not a word that should describe a predator. Not aggressive, maybe, but nice made it easy to forget, even temporarily that they were so dangerous.

"She's young still, and not fully grown. But forget that she's a predator for a moment and you will lose an arm. Remember that."
withfocus: (pic#8916512)

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-03-30 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ninja too," Naoki agrees. He has a harder time hiding and ambushing than his peers due to the light he gives off, but he's getting better. He's already much quieter than the genin who graduated with him at least.

"I'm attached to my arms, so I'll keep that in mind. How big will she get?" Remembering the way she swam at him when he held that fish, he's definitely not going to forget that mouth full of teeth.
noboatbigenough: (This is my good side.)

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2015-04-01 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Kisame considers Naoki, amused and pleased. No protest, just acknowledgement. It's either a sign of someone who's given up, which Kisame doesn't think is the case this time, or who knows where they need to improve and how to get better. The second case is very good, and he nods slightly before answering the question.

"Wild tiger sharks can get up to five meters. Because she's a summon she'll get anywhere from twice that to five times that, but that will probably be a century or so off, and she'll spend most of that time not much bigger than her wild cousins."

She's a good summon, and Kisame is almost wistful about the fact that he himself won't live long enough to see that growth.

[personal profile] withfocus 2015-04-01 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"At that size she'll do more than take an arm off." It's too bad she'll take so long to finish growing up, but on the other hand, Kisame probably has other sharks that big, and maybe just as friendly. Naoki hopes to have a summon of his own some day.

"Dive again? I have time for one or two more."
noboatbigenough: (Might be a cunning linguist.)

[personal profile] noboatbigenough 2015-04-02 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
It makes Kisame laugh. "Putting it mildly!"

Then he considers Naoki again. He isn't exhibiting any signs of fear at the idea. There aren't many who could be so comfortable around predators in general, much less such large summons. It's interesting, and maybe someday he'll see how that holds up to one of the larger sharks. Not tonight; Old Ajimaru would get cranky if there wasn't a fight and he was summoned.

So he nods at the suggestion. "I enjoy it. Why not?"
