Test Drive Post!
Sunshineverse | ||||
Okay everyone, it's time to test some people out! The rules of the game are simple. You have a character you would like to try out as a native to the setting of this game. You want to see if this is the right setting to play said character in, right? Well, then all you have to do is drop them into this post as a top level comment with this as the header: Character name | Series (OC's just put Original here) | Planned Village Affiliation Then you comment around and play with everyone else! If you need some ideas on how to get started, you can drop your character in during the middle of a mission, have them at an eatery around their village, or maybe even just doing weapons practice. It's up to you how you want to set out, so feel free to put your characters in this version of the Naruto universe however it most seems appropriate. Just be sure to say where you put them somewhere in your post though, otherwise two people might not even be threading in the same country. One last thing! Remember that your character was born in this universe, so whatever else you decide, your character is a world native, even if they might be a tourist in the village you decided to test them out on. And that's it. Just be good to each other and have fun! Threads you do here can count toward future activity checks, so long as the person you're threading with gets in too. These threads can also be used for samples on your application.

[The symbol that appears on the Seal Scrolls is from a shinobi missing and presumed dead for years. Feel free to assume it is a symbol your character knows. The handwriting on it, however, is so painstakingly neat that it almost looks mechanically reproduced, but that’s not possible, right?]
I understand that this scroll allows for swift communication over distances. We require information.
Is this Nirvana?
I calculate the chance of a negative answer to that question as high, therefore, we need to know who’s territory we are currently in. The terrain is composed of steep inclines and

Option B: In person/First contact at Summoning Island (Argilla will be tagging in as well)
The missive could have gone more smoothly, but they have acquired at least a part of the necessary information they required and other shinobi were able to provide a possible triangulation for their current location. If it was correct, a delegation to meet in person was expected to arrive shortly. It was decided that Serph and Sera would remain hidden, for reasons of security, and Heat would only cause unnecessary friction. The hunger beat at them all, but at least Gale wasn’t going to willingly succumb to it and start a fight just for the sake of fighting and eating.
Of the remaining members of their tribe, Gale and Argilla were deemed the best candidates to make a positive first impression, so they were standing by the ocean now, waiting. Gale turned to Argilla, confirming visually that she was also ready.
Gale wanted to be in a less outwardly relaxed pose, but it was important not to give the impression of hostility, so he repressed the urge. This waiting was… uncomfortable.
“If these shinobi don’t arrive soon…” He didn’t feel the need to elaborate. The hunger would become insistent soon for both of them. A solution would need to be implemented to make certain their control would not be strained.
Option C: In person/Attempted diplomatic visits
Learning about the world outside the Ruins was vital, so when an invitation for an envoy to visit their new potential allies came, there was no point in even considering a decline. The primary issue involved was that the request was for a single envoy, and not an invitation for the tribe. It made sense, militarily, but it was not comfortable. For this visit, it was decided that if only one could go, Gale would be the best choice for gathering information.
After receiving encouragements and admonishments, Gale had left his for his current destination and…
There were so many people, much more than Gale had ever witnessed in one place. All of them were warm and alive, and Vayu inside was raging against his control because they looked delicious. His Atma pulsed once, flaring bright green and sending glowing lines of it spiderwebbing around his calf, before he could contain it, and Gale paused for a moment to gain a better rein on his hunger. Failure here would endanger all of them.
In control again, he moved forward, pulling out the paperwork he had been given for this purpose and presented it to the shinobi at the gate.
There would be an escort, he’d been told, and Gale appraised the nearby candidates for the most likely and addressed the person.
“I am Gale of the Embryon.”
Option B
She's more concerned with how these shinobi will take to them, and how she is going to manage against people so foreign to everything she's ever known. She was friendly certainly, but prior to this there was a common knowledge base to for her to build off even in the heat of remembering things they'd never seen before that was a constant. And now...
"I'm worried." It's such a simple word, but it conveys so well the strange flutter in her stomach. It wasn't like when she was hungry, it was different it almost made her not want to eat at all. And with it comes a need to move that she is doing her very best to ignore, aware that it could look poorly on them when these shinobi finally do arrive.
no subject
But he understands Argilla, and her concern. These shinobi were more than an unknown. At least they had years of battle against the other tribes to base their strategy on. They know less than nothing about these strangers. It's a disadvantage, and it makes Gale want to bare and clench his teeth. But he doesn't, because the shinobi could arrive at any moment.
"I understand. But we will persevere." It's all he can offer, even though he knows it's not enough.
no subject
She nods and crosses her arms over her chest. She doesn't see the harm in the defensive body language when all was clear for as far as the eye could see. It was a comfort the gesture, her hands gripping her upper arms in a self-hug. "You really think so?"
She doesn't mean to sound cynical, but usually they have the opposite roles. He the pragmatic pessimist and she forever the optimist. Even in the face of disturbing revelations, she'd held onto that hope. In other circumstances, she might find it...amusing. Instead, she finds his confidence that they'll continue to endure reassuring. That sense that they'd already overcome such incredible odds as the smallest tribe and yet they'd come out still standing. It's a good reminder.
no subject
Memories of Lupa surface in his mind. He understands now, at least in part. Lupa was willing to sacrifice for them, and he would do the same for any of the Embryon. The thought is almost startling, but he knows that it is true. He is sure that they would do the same for him, and that bond will overpower any force pushed against them. No betrayal will be stronger than that.
"We've learned of betrayal, and will not be unaware of the possibility from now on. We will prepare, and they will have difficulty surprising us."
It's a small comfort that these shinobi strangers know as little about them as they do about the shinobi. They can probably use that lack of knowledge to their advantage, if they're careful not to give too much away. Gale looks out at the ocean, pondering the various ways they could glean more information.
no subject
She sighs, eyes closing as she breathes in slow and deep. The air smells different here on the beach than it does in the ruins. Cleaner, she finds that preferable. "You're already working on at least two contingencies." It's a fact that never ceases to relax her, as long as they have Gale, they'll be safe and able to stand against whatever these shinobi threw at them. It was his role and he did it well, better clearly than any of the other tribes strategists ever could have.
"You've prepared for in case they lied and sent more than one?" Which would be the advantageous thing to do, wouldn't it? Send many to capture them and get answers of their own? They had been careful, but despite what little the respondents had seemed to understand and be able to provide, they could have easily been masking their true intentions and just how much they already knew. Or this could go without conflict and she hoped for that option more than anything. Hadn't there been enough fighting already?
no subject
He'd selected this beach because of the high cliffs behind them, with only a few, difficult trails up them, and plenty of perches to watch from, concealed from line-of-sight of anyone approaching from the ocean. There is plenty of earth for Argilla to use, in case of an attack, and the water is something Serph can use, to mold into the deadly ice that no one else has been able to master. He can feel the air around himself, and knows that he can form it into weapons. This is as secure a position for accepting a visitor as they are capable of procuring. The only place more secure is probably where they've set up their new base, outside the Ruins, and Gale will not allow a stranger there.
"But our first plan of action should be peaceful discussion. We require too much information at the moment, in order to continue functioning as a stable tribe in this new... world."
The word doesn't feel quite right, and yet at the same time it does. They may not have literally come into a new world but it might as well be, considering how different it is.
no subject
She nods, she appreciated his foresight, how the earth beneath their feet hummed waiting. Like always it would respond with little prodding and she could be very deadly with it if provoked. But for now it waited, and it was content to wait until she needed it. ...If she needed it.
"That's the reason I'm here instead of Heat or Cielo." For a moment, there's something akin to amusement flickering in her eyes as she turns her head slightly to look at him. There were other reasons for Heat to be up in the cliffs, and she was more likely to actively challenge terms if they didn't work to their favor than Cielo. That and people in general seemed to open up to her at least somewhat better than their own. She was less...intimidating than Gale was to talk to. She felt and understood what they might
be feeling as well.
"We'll manage. No matter how different it is, we'll manage." They didn't have any choice but to manage and learn on the fly. So that's what they would do and they would do it well. Not without mistakes, mistakes were part of living, but they would learn from them and keep moving forward and sustain their tribe. Because ultimately new just meant different even if they haven't ascended as they were told they would.
no subject
He understands her comment as well. This will not be easy, and with the lack of enemies since they had won their way to what they'd thought was Nirvana, Vayu hungers for more... something flesh. What that something was, Gale is not sure, but humans possess it more strongly than even the largest and most powerful of the creatures they'd taken down for food here.
"We will make sure that whatever is offered here is to our benefit as a tribe. They will not consider us comrades, and we can potentially use that to our advantage." He can't be certain how yet, but his mind whirs. There will be a possible lack of respect, and with that will come underestimation. That can only benefit them, and even if it is a battle of words instead of demons and jutsu and blood, Gale is certain they will come out the victors.
no subject
She glances back over her shoulder, eyes scanning those cliffs. She can spot whispers of their comrades if she squints. Not them specifically, but the telltale signs that something up along that ridge is not purely nature. Or maybe it was just her familiarity with how Gale developed tactical deployments, sometimes she wasn't sure, but she knew they were there watching through their own scopes and she let her lips turn upward just a moment before turning back to face the slow rolling ocean.
"They'll be thinking along the same lines." It makes sense that they would try to use their lack of information against them. They've lived in such a small world for so long that they're bound to have different ideas of what things are worth than those from the outside. "Food should be a priority if they seem reasonable." It was something Gale was likely already considering, but it didn't hurt to remind him that the tribe was ever hungry and what was left of the natural wildlife would only last so long.
no subject
Argilla's statement also makes sense. The island will not support them for long, but he's wary of revealing that need right now. The Atma are so new to them, and they've all had vastly different reactions to that new need. It's all but impossible to accurately determine what a stranger's reaction will be.
But on the other hand, not enough food will end badly. They need to find a middle ground. "We will need to pursue avenues of food. But if they turn out to be enemies..."
It's almost... sad, that part of him wants them to be. It's his mind rationalizing an excuse to make his hunger less unacceptable.
no subject
"We do as we always have if they are. Lord knows Heat would prefer that they are." Not that she had to mention it, Gale knew that as well as she did. Their red haired comrade had embraced their changes and he sought conflict wherever possible in order to feed his demon. Was always the quickest to admit that he was hungry, even in the most miniscule way.
She sighs, "People... import livestock all the time?" It would be the easiest cover for their problem.
no subject
Her suggestion isn't a bad one, but Gale wonders slightly if regular livestock would satisfy. This knowledge they've rediscovers indicates that this island is full of creatures called Summons, and Gale knows enough to know that they aren't generally used for livestock, being too valuable. And even these Summons don't always satisfy the hunger enough. Still needing to import food is a good cover, if they can only get the right food.
"It is worth the attempt. If it does not prove adequate, we will find some other means."
no subject
She nods, "We'll have a better idea of our options once we get more information." Of that much she is sure. Right now they have too many fractured pieces of information and not all of them fit together neatly with what the others know to create clear pictures. She imagines that frustrates Gale the most.
"It bothers you, not having all the information doesn't it?"
no subject
Then she asks that question, and his mouth quirks in a smile that doesn't quite make it into the light before it's gone. "Knowledge is power, Argilla. Now more than ever. But I will learn to adapt."
They have before, and gotten out of traps and betrayal to come back stronger. He will adapt; he has to. Knowledge is something he doubts he'll ever have enough of to feel comfortable ever again.
no subject
Words bubble up then, teasing words, light-hearted. The words are almost out of place for such a serious situation, but they feel appropriate. "Of that I have no doubt." She very nearly grins then, her body language reading relaxed and lacking in the tension she'd had when they began their conversation.
It would come back, but for the moment it was nice to feel sort of free in the company of a comrade.
no subject
There is very little else he can do to prepare with so little information, so Gale closes his eyes for a moment, trusting that Argilla will remain alert. It's pleasant, standing here with the salt wind and the sand, and Argilla right next to him.
"Good. Doubt is unnecessary among comrades."

Still, Nanako had been told to make a grand gesture of some sort, as non-=threatening as she could manage.
So she had opted to use her larger, newer summon to ferry her over to the island itself, perching demurely on one carefully raised tentacle as the gigantic beast swam on. She had it stop a few hundred feet out from the shore, when she could pick out figures on the beach, and leisurely cut her palm and let the blood drip down, down, down to the waves below, summoning several massive jellyfish in decreasing size.
She leapt down to land on the cap of the largest and had the kraken raise itself up out of the water. She patted its beak gently and dismissed it, before turning and leaping across the string of jellyfish, each one dismissing after she had left. The last one was too big to get ver close, so she simply walked across the top of the water after it had puffed away, meandering her way to shore with a graceful gait. She stopped a few feet short of where the waves licked at the sand, and gave a short respectful bow.
"Hello. My name is Shishito Nanako. My village, Kirigakure sent word ahead of my visit." She straightened upland gestured to the beach. "May I come ashore?"

Still, when he sees the woman coming closer on the back of that creature, his first thought is the same as Vayu's: food. Gale shakes his head once, sharply. He's eaten recently enough, but it still makes his mouth water.
He's swallowing the saliva down when more creatures appear in smoke and he knows without knowing how that summoning requires blood, which only makes it worse. That woman would be a meal, if she were an enemy. He hisses a breath past clenched teeth and presses his fingers against the bridge of his nose until he's in control again.
"She is displaying her power." He says it softly to Argilla. It makes sense. A display of power to keep an unknown from attacking. Yet Vayu just wants to attack her more.
"A miscalculation," he adds quietly, trusting Argilla has had a similar reaction.
But he stands still and calm when the woman reaches them, not trusting her expression or her bow. Kirigakure. Hidden in Mist. He doesn't have anything else to grasp at about it, except how quickly they responded to the missive. Greedy. Or afraid, perhaps. He needs more information.
He watches the newcomer. She's strong, he can tell, noting muscle and flesh. It's hard for Gale to keep his gaze from lingering. Vayu hisses without actual words in his head that he and Argilla could share. All that muscle, with just a little softness for flavor, and-- He blinks away the image of her bloody hand and focuses on her face again. The hunger is there, and while he didn't lose control, he gave away something he shouldn't have. She'll know that he hungers for her flesh, once she gets enough evidence, and that could easily be used against him.
"I am Gale of the Embryon. You have our permission."
no subject
"She wouldn't know that," she murmurs, her gaze shifting briefly from the athletically built woman to her companion. The sudden urge to jab her elbow into his side squashed as quickly as it comes. It felt right, a physical blow to remind him that they were on that beach for a reason and treating the envoy as food even in a cursory sense wasn't amongst those reasons. But publicly chastising the most reserved member of the tribe for the exact same thing she'd just done? That is what keeps her hands at her sides and has her head canting to the side.
She studies the way the woman moves, searching for any sign of aggression. Too long have they been at war and while they were seeking allies, Bat's betrayal was still fresh. Still more than a darkened smudge on memory of what could happen if they were careless. If they trusted too easily, not that Gale would allow the tribe to do that, nor was he likely himself, but two pairs of watchful eyes were safer than the one. She shouldn't have been surprised to see that even on the shifting ground the woman moved with ease and purpose. Efficient, graceful in the way that spoke of danger and threat...the way she and the others moved in demon form.
And it hits her like a punch to the stomach that the woman moves in a way that reminds her of Jinana. But that shouldn't be possible at all should it. She'd ask Gale later when the woman was gone and the information gained was disseminated to the rest of the tribe leadership. After Serph made his decision on what they would do next. For now she'd smile (that was the word for when the corners of your lips turned upwards wasn't it?).
"I'm Argilla. It's nice to meet you." The words flow from her mouth all warmth with friendly overtones. She doesn't know where the last ones came from only that they felt like the correct ones, just like sad was correct for how Jinana seemed when she met her, and that this Shishito Nanako seemed shrewd.
no subject
That had been the second, hidden purpose of summoning in front of them. Nanako was one of the last products of the true Bloody Mist. She knew bloodthirst. She knew every facet of it. Her own was smothered to the point where even Yagura had trouble finding it sometimes, something offputtingly simple for her to do. Something that made her the crazy little girl who offed a Jounin to graduate.
And, she knew the second she felt it that sooner or later they and their tribe would strike up some sort of deep bond with Kirigakure. She wouldn't go so far as to call their village monstrous, but—Kirigakure was different from the other villagers. It was a place built on brutality and unabashed predation, vicious in a way that the current 'peaceful' era eyed nervously.
Nanako stepped onto the sand, and smiled at them with bone-deep warmth and gentleness, even as she healed the cut and washed away the blood with only the faintest twitch of her fingertip to fuel the techniques. "I assure you," she said, her voice rich with a kindness usually reserved for the very dearest of her own 'children'. "The pleasure is entirely mine."
no subject
He doesn't bare them like he wants to, completely motionless but for the movement of his eyes as they track every little motion from the expansion of ribs during breathing, to blinking. Either this woman, this stranger, is lying to try to gain advantage, or she sees the hunger and it makes her want to-- to what? Mother comes to mind. Smother follows shortly after. He's not sure which is more appropriate and doesn't dare ask Argilla. Now is not the time to reveal their difficulty with new words and unfamiliar concepts any more than they already have.
And also, Jinana was kind. Argilla is kind. Gale doesn't get quite the same... nuance from this woman as he does from both of them, and it bothers him.
Finally after those moments of perfect stillness, Gale finally speaks, tone as flat and mechanical as he can manage. It is natural for strangers to be suspicious of each other so he plays with his suspicions.
"Your false kindness will not gain you any foothold here. This is our territory, and we know betrayal very well." If it is not false, her reaction will tell him, and he will continue on from there. This is all bait. A move in a ... a chessmatch between them.
no subject
Her kindness doesn't shatter like a mask tossed aside once it served its purpose, mostly because it... wasn't a mask. Nanako is disquietingly sincere at all times, as a side-effect of her hatred of lies. It's part of why she's usually kept away from covert missions. But the kindness does shift—in the opposite manner he might have expected. It melted, deepening from something restrained by cordiality to a type of adoring compassion that was almost... obscene, maybe.
But she couldn't help it. That slightly hostile tone, those mistrusting eyes, the suspicion hanging heavy in the air—
"Just like Secchan..." Her hands came up, cupping her own cheeks gently as she stared at him with dreamy, terribly kind eyes. "I thought you might be, but you're really, really so much like that child was back then, my dears!"
no subject
But it's for that very reason that they had Gale be there too. What she couldn't hide her could, they could make that work in their favor. Even as the words 'my dears' rolls off the woman's tongue like they know each other, Argilla finds that need to move again near irresistible. Something in the way Nanako is looking at her comrade makes her want to step in front of him; shield him from the way she's looking at him. (Which she's certain he'd tell her is ridiculous since he isn't exactly shorter than her and he's already seen and processed her expression anyway.)
Lacking for other appropriate action, she lifts an arm and wraps it around herself. It was defensive but less obviously uncomfortable than if she'd chewed on her thumbnail as she wanted to.
"We aren't children." The statement is edged with a touch of annoyance. They've never been children, there aren't any children in the Junkyard before or after it was decimated. She pauses, takes a breath and holds it a second before letting it out again slowly. "You hardly know us, how can you be sure we're anything like this...Secchan?"
no subject
Argilla moves. The motion is defensive, and Gale can tell it's not the more extreme motion she wishes to make. She's restraining herself, and it brings Gale back to the knowledge that the move he needs to make cannot be the aggressive one. So he goes still, as utterly and completely as possible, for a moment or two.
Though his eyes are closed, Gale is very aware of the woman standing across from them. He's tempted to employ one of the genjutsu he's learned since receiving his Atma, but that would also be counted aggressive if it was discovered, and some of their opponents have had strong defenses against such things.
So he merely opens his eyes, calm regained, and continues Argilla's statements to the obvious conclusions. "My comrade is correct. There have never been children in the Ruins, and you do not know us to be able to compare our actions to any other individual. Desist, so that we may commence negotiations appropriately."
