THE ACADEMY AGE MEME

The Academy Age Meme

"No, you can't eat yourself if you henge into a bowl of ramen, go sit back down"

Ah yes, another long-awaited Sunshineverse meme!

As the name suggests, this meme is fairly straightforward: bring out the cute academy aged icons, because we'll be playing everyone as their young, academy aged selves! This time it's pretty straightforward, but here's a step by step anyway.

Step one: Post a top level comment with your character's name and affiliation at the time of their academy training. You should probably include their age--again, at the time they'd be in the academy--along with it. If, for whatever reason, your character didn't go to a ninja academy, probably just post them as a child around the time other kids would have been in the academy

Step two: Given the nature of this meme, you may want to include a scenario or two for people to tag into, but otherwise, it's a good idea to include relevant information people will need if they tag your character. If during their childhood they refused to leave trees, preferred to henge into a puddle to make people slip on them, or killed people indiscriminately, these are good things for people to know.

Step three: Tag to others, and relive your high school Academy days!

NOTE: Ages in this meme are synched up. That means school-kid Karin won't be able to kick it with school-kid Kushina. But! A school-kid Karin could end up interacting with a somewhat younger than current canon Kushina!

BONUS NOTES!

1: Although it isn't required to, all tags and threads in this meme can absolutely count toward actual in-game history for the characters involved!

2: Threads that count for history also count for activity! Just like the test drive meme, if the threads count for history, they also count for activity

3: Don't forget the NPC journal! This is a great opportunity to interact with dead/distanced/etc characters that would still be around or would be prominently involved with the history of your characters, and that's what this NPC journal is there for! Use it!

4: Most important - Have fun, you cute little ninja terrors
abileunaspada: (Nothing like a good stretch!)

Adela Milani | Age 5-8 Kirigakure -- Age 8-11 Konohagakure

[personal profile] abileunaspada 2014-10-12 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Notes about Kirigakure Time: Adela has been training at around this time and tends to declare that she'll be as great of a ninja as her Cousin Sephiroth, who by this point has already made a name of himself in Kiri as the Silver Terror. She's a lot more talk than she is show though, and she's much faster than she is strong. Unfortunately, dumb kid is dumb and doesn't realize that she can't back up her boasts with force entirely and doesn't utilize her speed properly so she tends to get beat up a lot and is one of the (physically) weaker fighters in academy. As a result, she does in fact tend to get beaten up and bullied a lot. Take that as you will.]

[Notes about Konohagakure Time: Adela, having just turned eight, was a refugee joining the class. She isn't nearly as boastful and is actually on the shy side, often returning home quickly and not really too friendly at first. She'll respond to people reaching out to her (so long as it isn't bullying and teasing like before) and she's tending to really shine in the more balanced teaching style of Konoha -- to the point where she graduates a year early. So yay!]

problemdaimyo: (Young 1)

Xing-Shu | Age 7 - Konoha, Age 10 - Kirigakure| Land of Noodles prince

[personal profile] problemdaimyo 2014-10-12 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Konoha

[He didn't get to leave the country often. He wasn't important enough to be needed outside of the country, and a family member of a daimyo was always a bounty target even when he didn't serve much purpose. He didn't fully grasp all of that, but he did understand that getting to visit Konoha was a new and amazing experience.

His mother had a meeting with the Daimyo of this land, but she'd sent him to the Konoha Academy (a place where ninjas trained to be ninjas, much like he studied books for politics, he supposed). It was nice to be out in the sun, without people hovering over him constantly worrying or scolding him. Watching other children about his age run around (wearing clothes one really could run in, unlike his robes), he hung back at the gates, golden brown eyes intent and curious.

His mother had suggested he go and get to know some of these ninja, people he might later recruit...but he wasn't certain how to. Should he ask what games they played?]

Kiri

[It had been a few years since his mother had first taken him out with her somewhere. It had been infrequent still, and ever since his eldest brother had fallen from the mountain and died she'd stopped taking him out at all (it was too dangerous, there were family members dying, and his father was stressing deeply enough that he might fall ill). This trip was undoubtedly because Kiri was so near to the Land of Noodles. He should treasure that, he knew, because any other outings were increasingly unlikely ever since another brother of his had eaten something bad and died overnight just the month before. If anyone else were to be harmed now...

He was quiet, studious, watching the village of Kirigakure with the same curious look as he had the other ninja villages, quietly encouraged to meet 'future employees'. Making friends wasn't likely, since he wouldn't be able to visit again...but it was still nice to be out of the palace, especially with the suffocating gloom that had fallen over it recently.

He wandered up to a fountain in the town and watched it curiously, as he thought over where he might go next.]

notveryspecial: (Small smile)

Sakura Haruno | Ages 7-11 | Konoha

[personal profile] notveryspecial 2014-10-12 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Notes to pay in mind: Sakura's story is exactly according to canon (other than the reigning hokage) through her Academy days, except that she gets a crush on Sasuke slightly earlier (8 instead of 9-ish). She doesn't start growing her hair out until 8 or 9. If you interact with her at 7 or younger (pre-academy there) she'll be timid and quiet. The older, the bolder and more...fangirly.

thebestuchiha: (Young curiosity.)

Obito | Age 6-9 Konoha

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-10-12 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[Notes!!!!

Obito has a very strong tendency to being a temperamental little brat, crying, and running away from people picking on him at six and seven. By age nine he's picked up the tendency to punch people for upsetting him too -coughs- so long as they aren't adults anyway.

You can poke him in Academy, at some training fields Academy students are known to use, at a tea shop he likes to frequent and always gets an extra Dango stick at because he helps out at the place sometimes, or around the Uchiha district. Or you could just grab him as he's running off somewhere because he realized he was supposed to be there and he's trying super hard, and failing, in not being late.

Go. Fight. Win! He was put on team Minato in the autumn of his being 9 so early team Minato is so totally fair game too. Come'n get meeeee!]
sheisthesunshine: (Gleeful)

Rin Nohara | Ages 5-9 | Konoha

[personal profile] sheisthesunshine 2014-10-12 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Rin must have gotten into the academy around the same time as Gai and Kakashi, but she graduated at 9, so there you have it. She's a sweetheart in the Academy, and studied Medical Jutsu from the outset. LET HER PRACTICE HER FIRST AID SKILLS ON YOU >D
scarecrowboy: (we met when we were young)

Kakashi Hatake | Age 5 / Ages 6-9 | Konoha

[personal profile] scarecrowboy 2014-10-12 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Academy #1: Age 5
Kakashi joined the academy at the same time as most of his cohort, but in the space of what is approximately a year (Because Kakashi's genius just won't quit) he graduated the academy as a genin at the age of 5.

At this time he's a reasonably pliant and friendly little boy. He will actually talk to you as long as you talk to him first, otherwise he spends a lot of his time training, studying, reading etc. His pops is still alive and kicking, so his attitude is much more open - but that doesn't mean you'll get any secrets or important information out of him. Sorry all those who wanted some dirt on his older self!

He does read and does like the quiet. He's a little antisocial, which can either come off as him being shy or standoffish, depending on how you take him. He has trouble making friends due to the fact that he's so intelligent, he usually puts people off by being stuck up, or chooses to not affiliate himself with people he considers likely to slow him down.
Having said that, catch him in the right situation or mood and you've got yourself a very excitable and enthusiastic little budding shinobi who will definitely geek out with you about how great it is to be in the academy. He'll laugh and smile too!

Academy #2: Ages 6-9
At age 6, Kakashi gets promoted to chuunin.
It's some time around here that he would inevitably be thrown back into the academy to mingle with his peers - since they would all eventually be his coworkers, and some his team, he'd have to make friends with them or at least get to know their strategies in order to fine tune his own.
He used this time to seriously brush up on his skills, giving him an edge and extra advantage that not many have.

However, because of his furthered level, running around with a lot of academy students as a chuunin put Kakashi even more off making friends, and started to sculpt the douchebag he is in his youth. He's much more opinionated and rude from age 6. If he is disinterested in you or the conversation, he will just leave. He has no problems ignoring people and is very, very aware of how talented and intelligent he is. At this time he can be found usually by himself, usually on paths that people don't take, looking to avoid contact with anyone.

Those that do manage to get close to him are treasured by him, even if he'd never say it out loud. Under the harsh exterior he's the same soft little boy who likes to read and likes the quiet, and likes to see his friends happy. He's just matured an awful lot faster than most of them.
What is childhood? A myth, apparently.

At age 9, his father commits suicide. This is a big staple for Kakashi's psyche. He stops being nice altogether, and stops thinking of the people around him as friends. He cares about nothing but being a textbook shinobi to the best of his heightened abilities. If you run into him at this point, don't be surprised if he's incredibly rude to you.

A little later in that age, he "graduates" to be placed on Team Minato.

pinnedbangs: (bitty ready for action fais)

Rin Okumura | Age 7-10 | Kirigakure

[personal profile] pinnedbangs 2014-10-13 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Rin started his Academy training at seven. He didn't have any prior knowledge to shinobi arts beforehand, so he tackles every lesson with bursting excitement. It's too bad that he gets into trouble, mostly due to taking the bait when others make fun of him. It is also too bad for those would-be bullies because as much damage as they deal to Rin, he gives it right back twofold. And if he doesn't, then he's going to keep on trying until he does. It's about this time that he gets into trouble for beating people even when they're down.

Because of his 'punch first ask questions in the middle of an attack' attitude he doesn't have many friends. He has his brother but he has wondered from time to time what it would be to have one. Underneath the volatile persona, he's actually a fairly sensitive boy. He tends to be a little more on the distrustful side with strangers but if his interest is piqued, he'd be more than willing to unravel and smile brightly.]
morningpeacock: (one more thing!)

Maito Gai | circa ages 5-7 | Konoha

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-10-13 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Canon states Gai's Academy graduating age as 7, and I'm just guessing for the 5 starting point.

Child!Gai flunked his first entrance exam for the Academy and then still did very poorly in ninjutsu and genjutsu. His father, Maito Dai, never progressed past genin. Some ninja subjected the two to ridicule and mockery, and it seems to have happened fairly often. At this age, Gai still has his father and Gai is just starting to get past the point where he was very sensitive to/frustrated by what people thought of them.

Miro and I are not sure yet, but the Rivalry may be newly minted. We're still fudging with canon.

When not at the Academy, Gai can be found training, diligently collecting groceries in the market for his father, training more, etc.]
sensethis: (Default)

Karin | Kusagakure 7-9, Konohagakure 9-10, Uzu 10-12

[personal profile] sensethis 2014-10-15 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[When Karin was living in Kusagakure, she didn't actually enroll in the academy until after her parents died when she was eight so there's a year in which she knows other shinobi children but isn't actively being trained. It should be noted that her parents have long since dropped the surname Uzumaki and thus doesn't know she is one. She just knows she senses things that other and much better trained people either can't or have difficulty sensing. Starting at 8 she was enrolled in the academy after becoming a ward and of the village. She was sort of a cynical and distrusting little brat. Curious too with a great deal of over confidence in her abilities.

As for her time in Konoha, she's living with Kushina, Minato, and Naruto and does join Naruto's class at the academy. She's still a brat, but she's friendlier for the most part. She loves sparring matches at the academy even though she's sort of a clumsy mess and doesn't have the physical strength yet to really make those hits hurt. She really shines in tracking exercises though and she's probably the least loved member of her class when such exercises are on the schedule.

Finally, Uzu she finishes her academy stint privately tutored when there was time during the early rebuilding, and eventually receives promotion to genin from Kushina around roughly the same time Naruto's class graduated.]
uchihasavior: (young itachi)

Uchiha Itachi [Age 6-7 | Konohagakure ]

[personal profile] uchihasavior 2014-10-17 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ Notes- Itachi only spent one year total in his Academy time, on the fast track to being a genin and becoming the son his Father expected. He was very quiet, studious, and unfortunately hard to reach by the students his age, with how intelligent he was. His Academy teacher described Itachi as 'teaching himself'.]

By six months in the Academy, the students learned to leave him alone. He didn't seem all too talkative, and his subjects of conversation left the majority of the other students confused, and some of them, upset. So he learned to keep to himself, somewhat having expected this. He liked his own explanation for it better than Fugaku's, though. It wasn't that he was far above them and better....it was that he was different.

He won every single one of his spars, and was now commonly exempt from them. So he found himself a nice spot in the back of the courtyard, with a thick book settled snugly in his lap. Distancing himself from the cries of the children testing out their fighting skills, he immersed himself in reading. He didn't expect company, but wasn't entirely against it.

ninjaindianajones: look at those blank eyes tho (kid)

Yamada Mika [Age 7-10 | Konohagakure]

[personal profile] ninjaindianajones 2014-10-17 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Notes; The first thing everyone notices about Mika is her hair. It's easily twice the size of her head, more so if it's humid outside.

Her grandmother and mother weren't exactly happy about Mika deciding to become a ninja. They made attempts to dissuade her but she was determined to not fall behind her older twin brothers and secretly craved her father's approval.

Having four brothers and being the "middle child" meant Mika had to fight for all the attention she could get from her parents. That commanding attitude carried over into the academy and made her a target for ridicule from other students. Often this led to playground brawls and Mika having to take time out of the classroom. She might have graduated sooner if she had been more docile. It took the work of dedicated teachers to help Mika calm down and focus that energy on her studies. By the time she graduated Mika was one of the top students in sparring and written testing. In fact Mika had taken to reading quite often, something that will later serve her well in the academic field.

This was also a tumultuous emotional period in Mika's life, as she struggled to understand the feelings she experienced around other girls. Being raised in a conservative home instilled harsh, judgmental views in the girl. Sometimes her frustration boiled over into anger, a bad time to be around Mika for anyone. Especially if you're female.

Extra; Mika received a camera on her seventh birthday and can be found around the village taking candid photos, shooting scenery and such.]
